Agronomist (Farming Systems)

The Opportunity

Provide strategic support to the leadership of the Coastal Farming Systems in the sub-tropics in Southern Queensland to build a portfolio of research, development and extension projects that supports continued innovation for productive, profitable and sustainable farming systems in line with government/departmental priorities.

In consultation with the team leader, you will provide scientific support to develop and negotiate new projects and funding from other agencies and funding bodies that address research priorities.

Build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial internal and external relationships and collaborative partnerships with industry organisations, Natural Resource Management bodies and other government agencies at a regional and state level to address productivity and environmental outcomes.

Identify, develop, implement, and evaluate field trial programs that advance agronomic practices that have a positive impact on productivity and water quality outcomes.

Ensure that appropriate processes are used so that research outcomes are understood by stakeholders and are integrated into improved management practices and ability to implement an agronomic field trial program.

Contribute to the research and publish key findings in scientific journals, report impacts and implications in line with industry and department needs.

Collect, collate, evaluate and analyse project data using appropriate computer and scientific technology.

Maintain an individual professional development program and active professional networks to ensure best practice in research and extension in the farming systems area.

Work as part of a team to ensure project milestones are attained in a timely manner.

Undertake supervision and direction of support staff, as needed.

Technical Requirements Of The Role Include

• Extensive knowledge of emerging issues for the modern farming system in coastal Queensland, particularly in the area of off-site impacts and subsequent challenges for profitability and sustainability of natural resources in the region.
• Demonstrated ability to initiate, conduct, manage, report and publish the scientific outcomes of rigorous field-based research using experimental and on-farm research methods.
• Project management skills with demonstrated ability to develop, manage, evaluate and report on the impacts of a strategic research portfolio in a complex organisational environment with multiple stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to participate effectively in multi-disciplinary RDE teams that support widespread integration of research outcomes into regional farming systems, work independently when required and supervise other project staff.
• Skills in being able to operate farm machinery would be advantageous.

What We Are Looking For (qualifications, Registrations, Experience)

• A Bachelor degree (AQF level 7 or equivalent) or higher in Science, Agricultural Science or Applied Science from a recognised tertiary institution.
• Current 'C' class drivers licence.
