About the Role
Aboriginality is a genuine qualification for this position in accordance with Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984. The State Bushfire Mitigation Team is responsible for the management of vegetation on Unallocated Crown Land and Unmanaged Reserves within the Perth metropolitan area and all gazetted WA townsites. This position plays a key role in reducing the risk and impact of bushfires on communities.
The role is responsible for:
- Using various tools, machines and equipment to remove or modify vegetation, such as firebreak construction and maintenance work, erecting signage and maintaining water points.
- Participating in a range of vegetation management and fuel reduction activities, including machine mulching, slashing, line trimming, and chainsaw/pole saw operations.
- Using chemical spraying techniques to manage vegetation growth.
- Ensuring work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in alignment with environmental considerations.
- Maintaining relevant qualifications and undertaking training to meet organisational requirements.
- During bushfire events, the crew may be deployed to various locations within Western Australia to assist with response and recovery operations.
This position offers the opportunity to work in a diverse and inclusive environment and to travel to various locations across the state. The role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, often in remote regional areas. Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment. Prerequisites
- Possession of a current unrestricted Australian C-Class (manual) driver’s licence and an ability to attain or hold Heavy Rigid licence which must be valid for the duration of employment.
- Physically fit and able to pass a pre‑employment medical assessment.
Employment Conditions and Additional Information
DFES is an emergency services organisation and all employees may be required to work or travel outside of normal business hours to assist with emergencies and additional allowances may apply.

Eligibility To Apply
You must be an Australian Citizen or hold permanent residency. National Police Certificate: A condition of employment for new employees of DFES is that a current National Police Certificate (less than 3 months old) is provided prior to commencement.
Choice of Super
The Fire and Emergency Services (Superannuation Fund) Regulations 1986, prevents DFES from offering choice of super for permanent appointments. Those appointed permanently, only have the following two options: Remain with their existing GESB Superannuation account; or Join the Fire and Emergency Services Superannuation Fund.
