Christchurch, based in Templeton

Part-time Casual Positions, option to select day or night shifts depending on your availability.

In Canterbury, there are residential facilities (Matawhāiti and Tōruatanga) that are run by the Department of Corrections for people who have a history of high risk offending behaviour and are subject to sentences or orders (including extended supervision orders, intensive monitoring orders or public protection orders) when released from prison. These facilities are operated by Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections) and designed to assist individuals to develop important life skills within a supportive, supervised and secure environment. These residences are a vital part of the rehabilitative journey for our residents to help support them to live in a community setting while also ensuring safety for the wider community.

We are looking for casual assistant residential supervisors to join our team to supervise, support, motivate and positively influence the reintegrative journey for those in our care. These casual hours will be on an as and when basis to cover leave or sickness. We work 12 hour shift patterns, and can support your availability to work only nights or only days or a mixture of both.

As a casual staff member, you will be covering shift vacancies from planned and short notice leave on an “as and when required” basis. We operate a cyclic shift roster which includes nightshifts, weekends and public holidays. A typical shift is 12 hours long and will see you:

  • Working cooperatively with residents to help them achieve their reintegrative goals, keeping in mind their complex mental health or disabilities.
  • Supporting residents, both within the residences and on community outings, to promote public safety through the safe management and supervision of each individual resident.
  • Modelling pro-social behaviour.
  • Supporting and participating in residents' rehabilitative and reintegrative activities.
  • Being aware of risk and responding to heightened behaviours.

You will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • A full New Zealand Drivers Licence with the ability to drive a manual.
  • Be physically fit.
  • Experience working with people from all walks of life, particularly with complex needs.
  • An ability to make decisions in a safe and logical manner, providing practical solutions to day to day issues.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Culturally respectful and non-judgemental.
  • An ability to maintain clear and professional boundaries at all times.

If you pride yourself on your ability to provide a high standard of care, you have strong communication skills, solid experience managing individuals with challenging and complex needs and you want to make a positive difference to community safety, then we want to hear from you!

As this is a casual role, pay rates will be $31.65 per hour. Join Ara Poutama Aotearoa - Department of Corrections, where your work will contribute to improving public safety, reducing re-offending, and addressing the over representation of Māori in correctional facilities. As a values-led organisation, we use the principles of rangatira (leadership), manaaki (respect), wairua (spirituality), kaitiaki (guardianship), and whānau (relationships) to guide our work and achieve the goals of our strategy.

We value diversity in our workforce, and as a Public Service organisation we are committed to building a workforce that reflects the public we serve. We strive to make our recruitment process fair, and we encourage you to discuss reasonable accommodations with us if required.
