Salary: £44,241 (Salary advertised is full time equivalent) – A Civil Service Pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%

Contract Type: Permanent – Flexible working, Part-time

Based in Southampton, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is part of the Department for Transport and plays a vital role in improving safety at sea. We investigate marine accidents worldwide to prevent future incidents, not to assign blame or enforce laws. As Health and Safety Lead, you’ll manage policies and procedures, supporting a skilled team of investigators and office staff who work on complex marine casualty cases across the UK and internationally.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Develop and maintain MAIB’s safety management system, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, leading health and safety audits as necessary.

* Monitor and investigate staff accidents, incidents, and near misses; implement control measures as needed and ensure staff have the right PPE for the work they undertake

* Provide direct support to operational staff in identifying and mitigating risks at accident sites.

About you

Essential qualifications/licenses:

1. A National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) general certificate in occupational health and safety or higher.

2. A full UK driving license

3. Valid passport for travel

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

* You will be highly motivated and confident, inquisitive and a critical thinker. You must be able to work under pressure both as part of a team and independently. You will require considerable diplomatic skills and be able to engage colleagues and external stakeholders in the discussion of new, unfamiliar or controversial concepts.

* You will be expected to apply sound judgement and strong leadership skills, and to be empathetic when dealing with potentially traumatised individuals. Due to the nature of MAIB operations, you will be exposed to situations, information, recordings and material of a sensitive or potentially distressing nature. xiskglj

* You will have experience of risk management, such as conducting, reviewing and completing risk assessments.
