Here at the Ministry of Housing and Local Communities (MHCLG) we work on projects that make a real difference to people’s lives. We’re currently looking for an AWS Engineer to join our Cloud Platform team.
We have around 3,500 staff based across 20 UK offices.
Responsibilities
- Support the design, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the department’s AWS organisation and shared services.
- Collaborate with architecture, security and delivery teams to ensure cloud infrastructure is secure, scalable, and aligned with departmental goals.
- Assist with migration of services and deployment of new cloud‑native capabilities, ensuring operational excellence across environments.
- Maintain and evolve the AWS organisation, including Service Control Policies (SCPs), account structure and billing controls.
- Design, review and deploy new services into AWS in line with architectural and security standards.
- Modernise key infrastructure services, including patching, automation, and performance tuning.
- Ensure infrastructure‑as‑code practices are followed using Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
- Monitor and optimise cloud cost, resilience and operational performance.
- Participate in incident response, root‑cause analysis and post‑incident reviews.
- Contribute to the cloud strategy, standards and best practices across the department.
Qualifications
- Strong hands‑on experience with AWS core services (VPC, IAM, EC2, S3, CloudWatch, Route 53).
- Experience managing multi‑account AWS organisations and shared services.
- Proficiency in Infrastructure‑as‑Code – Terraform preferred, CloudFormation a plus.
- Solid understanding of networking, security controls and identity management in cloud environments.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools (e.g. GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline).
- Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as CloudWatch, ELK or Datadog.
- Ability to work in agile, cross‑functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
- AWS certification (Solutions Architect Associate/Professional, DevOps Engineer) desirable.
- Experience with cloud security posture management tools (e.g. Wiz) and UK Government cloud security guidance (NCSC) is a plus.
- ITIL Foundation certification or experience working in ITIL‑aligned environments a plus.
