We are recruiting a software developer to work in our ServiceNow Technology Operations team to manage and improve DfE's ServiceNow platform. You will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to develop solutions addressing business challenges. Your role will involve translating these solutions into effective workflows, supporting end-to-end business processes using ServiceNow's best practice tools and technology. Your primary focus will be on delivering value to our users, maximising departmental efficiencies, and enhancing the overall user experience.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Senior Developer and Product Manager to identify opportunities and shape the roadmap.
  • Keep up to date with ServiceNow developments and opportunities they may create for the department.
  • Support the Senior Developer in leading a team of talented ServiceNow developers supporting their learning and development.
  • Set and promote high standards of work.
  • Build a supportive, transparent, and collaborative working environment.
  • Provide support with administration, application development, maintenance, and technical support by using good practice web programming techniques to configure robust solutions.
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies.

Please Note: As part of the team you will be required to ensure adequate cover is provided between 8am and 5pm Mon-Fri. Some flexibility may be shown and can be discussed with the successful applicant. Regular travel to other offices is required for this role.

Essential Criteria:

  • Modern coding and development standards, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of CSS, HTML, JavaScript, ServiceNow scripting (Business Rules, Client Scripts, UI Policies), and development tools like Flow Designer.
  • Understanding of ServiceNow modules- ITSM, ITOM.
  • Ability to facilitate technical workshops and requirements discussions with stakeholders of varying level of seniority and technical skill.
  • Good understanding and experience of agile methodologies.
  • UCD focus.
  • Integrations, automation and/or orchestration via workflows, scripting web services/APIs, and IntegrationHub.
  • Development process optimisation.
  • Understanding of information security.
  • System design and support.
  • ITIL framework knowledge and understanding of service management principles.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of other modules of ServiceNow platform.
  • Experience supporting, coaching, and mentoring less experienced colleagues.

  • Experience with CMDB/CSDM.
  • ITIL 4 certification.

Technical skills:

Alongside your salary of ÂŁ41,458, Department for Education contributes ÂŁ12,010 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. As a member of the DfE, you will be entitled to join the highly competitive Civil Service Pension Scheme, which many experts agree is one of the most generous in the UK. You will have 25 days leave, increasing by 1 day every year to a maximum of 30 days after five years’ service. In addition, all staff receive the King’s Birthday privilege holiday and 8 days’ bank and public holidays.

Most DfE employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending at least 60% of their time in an office or work setting. Changes to these working arrangements are available in exceptional circumstances but must be agreed with the line manager and in line with the requirements of the role. Travel to your primary office location will not be paid for by DfE, but costs for travel to an office which is not your main location will be covered.

Staff appointed on promotion will move on to modernised DfE terms. Staff will transfer over on their existing salary (on lateral transfer) and any pay above the DfE pay band maximum will be paid as a mark time allowance. Staff moving on promotion will have their salaries calculated using the principles set out in the attached OGD transfer supplementary information.
