The Department for Business and Trade supports businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the centre of the department in the Strategy & Private Office Directorate. We are looking for talented and enthusiastic people to join DBT's Delivery Unit and lead one of its teams. The Delivery Unit plays a vital end-to-end role in ensuring the department prioritises and funds programmes that will have the greatest impact on growth, and delivers them effectively through close monitoring, hands-on support and escalation of emerging issues to leadership.

We track performance, spot and escalate emerging issues to keep the departmental programme on track, and ensure senior officials, Special Advisers and ministers are brought in at key junctures. These roles are focused on the first step of the Delivery Unit's mandate – leading the teams that ensure the department is prioritising and funding the most strategic programmes. It is fast-paced and high-profile, working closely with senior counterparts across the department and government to influence spending decisions and set, own and deliver DBT's strategic narrative.

Core responsibilities in both roles include:

  • Lead a team of 4 people.
  • Manage effective relationships in DBT and across government, including with HMT and Cabinet Office, as part of the planning and performance network.
  • Drawing on best practice for strategic planning both within the Civil Service and outside to develop capability and shape our work.
  • Core member of the Delivery Unit's Senior Management Team working across the Unit to maximise our impact.

Head of Strategic Prioritisation

  • Coordinate DBT's approach to major fiscal events to ensure we are able to secure funding for programmes that will have the most significant impact on growth.
  • Lead the department's engagement with the Treasury to ensure resources are managed effectively across priorities.
  • Strategic lead for Spending Reviews (and other similar exercises) working closely with Finance, Analysis and HR.

Head of Strategic Alignment

  • Lead the development of the Strategic Plan, setting out the outcomes the department wants to achieve, and how they will be delivered and measured.
  • Lead the 'strategic keyholder' function which prioritises the department's new investments, including assessing the quality of business cases and engaging with seniors on the strategic fit.
  • Provide strategic input so that in-year decisions are aligned with Ministerial priorities.

Disability Confident. A Disability Confident employer will generally offer an interview to any applicant that declares they have a disability and meets the minimum criteria for the job as defined by the employer.
