Role Summary

A talented and experienced Senior Designer to deliver the design direction of our media-funded print content. This role will be key in managing the creative process for all print-based assets, ensuring high-quality design that aligns with brand guidelines and meets the needs of both advertisers, Waitrose and audiences. You will be a part of a team of designers while working collaboratively with other departments to produce impactful and visually compelling print materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the art direction and design of commercial content, ensuring high-quality execution of our magazines, newspaper, recipe cards, brochures and other print collateral.
  • Cast, brief and lead food photography teams to ensure a high-quality output that meets supplier need, planned channel usage and maintains brand consistency.
  • Collaborate with the editorial team to bring concepts to life and with the Video Lead to provide art direction for media-funded video.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of the wider Food Studio content, outside of paid-for content.
  • Work with printers, vendors, and production teams to ensure accurate, high quality and timely execution of print materials.
  • Maintain and evolve the brand’s visual language across print assets, ensuring consistency and alignment with broader creative strategy.
  • Present and communicate design concepts to key stakeholders, providing clear rationale and direction.
  • Stay updated on design trends and print technologies to continuously improve design quality and efficiency.

Required skills and experience

  • Proven experience (5+ years) in graphic design, with a strong focus on print publications and the production process.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating your experience in print publications, with examples of design-led editorial projects.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and other design software.
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout design, colour theory, and print production techniques.
  • Experience managing and leading design teams, with the ability to provide mentorship and direction.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain design concepts clearly to non-designers and clients.
  • High attention to detail, ensuring that all designs meet print standards and client expectations.
  • Experience in collaborating with external vendors, including printers and suppliers, to ensure smooth project execution.
