The role of Controls Lead Engineer is to manage all engineering activities of a project related to Controls Hardware and Software, ensuring that relevant deliverables are in time, within scope, quality and budget and adhere to established standards. As the Controls Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for estimating and managing the controls engineering-related project risks, taking ownership of the related planning and scheduling, and acting as the primary point of contact for controls engineering. The position reports to the Project Manager in the respective projects or, if appointed, to a Project Lead Engineer. The role will be involved in the full cycle of the project from sales through engineering up to handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Sales team during the sales phase by providing technical advice, supporting estimation efforts, project schedule creation and understanding of the required engineering skill set.
- Identify improvements to the engineering process and prepare supporting documentation.
- Ensure that we have resources from the Controls Engineering Team with the right skill set to execute the project.
- Act as the main Controls Engineering point of contact for the Project Manager, Site Manager, Procurement, Manufacturing, as well as the client architect, builder, and design consultants.
- Lead project Controls Engineering teams through task allocation and reporting.
- Create and update Controls Engineering project status reports, financial forecasts and schedule updates (resources updates); ensuring Controls Engineering cost control.
- Document, elevate and manage Controls Engineering project risks, including preparation of Project Status Report and Project Variation Request.
- Ensure all project Quality Gates are met for Controls Engineering.
- Conduct regular on-site safety audits when visiting a site, and derive actions.
- Identify and propose Lean improvements.
- Support lessons learned sessions and project closing.
- Ensure quality of all necessary documentation to execute installation on site (i.e. schematic drawings) has been provided on time.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Degree-level education within a technical engineering discipline.
- Experience working in a similar project engineering role with exposure to budgeting, planning, scheduling, and risk management.
- Experience working within an industrial automation environment.
- Experience leading project teams on complex projects.
- Working understanding of PLC and control systems.
- Working knowledge of ISO standards governing the automated warehouse industry.
- Ability to travel approximately 50% of the time (depending on the project stage).
- Good communication skills, highly organised and proactive in their approach.
- Understanding of MS Project, JIRA, and other project management tools.
- Understand and use relevant design requirements such as the Machinery Directive and safety standards.
