A highly advanced engineering and technology business is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join its Research & Development team, supporting the development of next-generation high-precision and complex engineered systems. The OpportunityYou will play a key role in the design and development of sophisticated electro-mechanical systems from concept through to production. Working within a multidisciplinary R&D environment, you will contribute to the development of highly engineered products used in technically demanding global industries. The position offers a blend of hands-on engineering, technical leadership, and project responsibility, with the opportunity to influence product direction and engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities- Lead concept generation and detailed mechanical design activities
- Develop innovative and robust engineering solutions for complex technical challenges
- Take ownership of projects through the full product development lifecycle
- Lead and contribute to technical and design review activities
- Provide mentoring, guidance, and technical leadership to engineers and contractors
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including electronics, software, systems, manufacturing, and operations
- Ensure projects are delivered to agreed technical, quality, cost, and schedule objectives
- Support continuous improvement in engineering standards and processes
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and quality requirements
Applications are welcomed from experienced Senior or Principal Mechanical Engineers with strong technical depth and leadership capability. Suitable candidates are likely to demonstrate:
- Strong mechanical design capability combined with practical problem-solving skills
- Experience developing precision electro-mechanical or high-performance engineered systems
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles
- Ability to work effectively within cross-functional, matrix-based organisations
- Experience carrying products through the full development lifecycle
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- High attention to detail and analytical capability
- Experience using FEA for stiffness, structural, or vibration analysis
Candidates should ideally possess experience in several of the following areas:
- Precision engineering or complex mechanical systems
- Drives and motion/control systems
- Manufacturing engineering and materials selection
- CAD design packages such as SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, or Creo/Pro-Engineer
- Product Data Management (PDM) systems
- Engineering analysis tools such as MATLAB or similar
Degree or Master’s qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering discipline. Typically 5+ years’ experience in a senior or principal level engineering role.
