Senior Payroll Administrator

Location: Plymouth/Hybrid – expectation to be office based approx. 2 days per week

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time (37 hours per week)

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Payroll Administrator to play a key role in delivering a high-quality payroll service for a diverse range of customers, including NHS, Teachers, Local Government, and third sector organisations. Supporting circa 8,500 employees through our Payroll Bureau, you will ensure payroll is accurate, timely, and compliant with all relevant regulations, while providing excellent customer service.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both hands-on payroll work and providing technical guidance to colleagues, with a strong eye for process improvement and detail.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting a team of Payroll Administrators to deliver payroll services for internal and external customers.
  • Ensuring payments are processed accurately, on time, and in line with legislation, policies, and conditions of service.
  • Managing complex payroll processes including new starters, leavers, variations to pay, absences, and deductions.
  • Assisting with validation, reconciliation, and end-of-period routines.
  • Providing advice on complex payroll and legislative issues to colleagues and customers.
  • Documenting payroll processes and delivering training to team members.
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in payroll systems and processes.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and compliance with data protection regulations.

What we’re looking for

  • Certificate in Payroll Administration (e.g., CIPP Payroll Technician Certificate) or equivalent experience at supervisory level.
  • Strong knowledge of statutory pay-related legislation, pension contributions, and employee terms and conditions.
  • Experience of technology-enabled HR and payroll systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.
