Are you ready for your next career challenge? Are you an experienced Underwriter or Credit professional looking to take your career in a new direction?

We’re looking for a Universal Underwriter (Operations) to join a leading UK financial services organisation, supporting its retail banking customers and playing a key role in responsible lending decisions.

This is an excellent opportunity to use your existing underwriting and credit experience while developing your skills across a broader range of products, customers and business areas.

The role

  • Assessing customer financial circumstances and lending applications
  • Making responsible credit and lending decisions in line with agreed lending standards
  • Identifying potential fraud and helping minimise losses and bad debt
  • Ensuring all policies, procedures and internal controls are followed
  • Providing guidance and feedback to related business areas
  • Supporting continuous improvement across the customer journey
  • Reviewing policies and procedures and making evidence-based recommendations for change
  • Working towards customer satisfaction, revenue and cost-containment objectives
  • Ensuring relevant regulatory requirements are understood and applied
  • Contributing to strong team performance and positive customer outcomes

What we’re looking for

We’re keen to hear from candidates with experience in underwriting, credit assessment, lending operations or a related financial services environment. You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience assessing lending applications and making credit decisions
  • A good understanding of responsible lending and credit risk principles
  • We don’t need the in-depth judgement lending skills, this role will involve reviewing data, checking policy & procedure, and following a decision tree approach to either accept or decline the low risk / non-complex mortgage application types
  • Experience identifying fraud, risk and potential financial losses
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • A customer-focused approach
  • The confidence to challenge processes and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • An understanding of the wider UK financial services and retail banking environment
