The UK government provides tax incentives to businesses performing R&D. Deloitte’s R&D tax services group is a market leader in helping clients secure these incentives and is the most experienced team in the UK.
Continued market success has created new opportunities, and we are now looking to recruit candidates with an Electrical Engineering background to join this successful team. You will apply your technical knowledge focused on clients operating in the energy transition, power, and utilities renewables sectors, helping companies identify activities that qualify as R&D for these incentives. R&D for tax purposes can involve activities from basic research through to early-stage new product & process development, industrial-scale trials, and ongoing process improvement activity across all areas of engineering and manufacturing.

Develop your technical expertise to help companies in the energy, resources, industrials and manufacturing industry maximise their R&D tax relief. As a Manager within our specialist team, you\’ll play a crucial role in analysing complex technical projects and translating them into successful R&D tax claims. You’ll leverage your industry experience to interpret and communicate complex technical information clearly to HMRC.
In your role as a Manager you will be in a client-facing from Day One, conducting technical interviews and preparing documentation to support R&D tax claims. You will be working with senior technical and finance staff within our client companies where you will need to understand the nature of the work being performed and prepare high quality documentation to explain how projects meet the definition of R&D.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Analysing technical data and documentation from clients to support the planning and development of R&D claim methodologies, specifically focusing on electrical engineering projects within the energy transition, power, and utilities renewables sectors.
- Conducting detailed technical interviews with client engineers and scientists working on projects such as smart grids, renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, and power electronics to advise on R&D tax relief eligibility.
- Supporting the wider team by expanding your technical knowledge to other industry sectors as required, learning and applying new technical concepts to support R&D claim development across a diverse range of clients. This will involve undertaking relevant training and actively seeking opportunities to broaden your understanding of different technologies and processes.
- Successfully interpreting and articulating the value of complex technical work undertaken by engineering teams to HMRC, ensuring alignment with qualifying R&D activities.
- Guiding clients through the R&D assessment process, identifying qualifying activities and eligible expenditures, ensuring compliance with HMRC reporting requirements.
- Developing comprehensive technical documentation that effectively communicates complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including HMRC.
- Collaborating with project teams to accurately capture qualifying R&D costs related to for example electrical engineering activities within energy projects.
- Drafting robust project descriptions for HMRC submission, clearly articulating the basis for our clients\’ R&D claims.
- Managing a diverse portfolio of clients, prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines effectively.
- Thriving in a collaborative and inclusive team environment, leveraging your expertise to deliver exceptional client service.
Connect to your skills and professional experience
- Previous experience within R&D tax credits or equivalent is desirable but not essential. An understanding of the principles of R&D tax relief is beneficial.
- Previous experience with government grants and incentives within tax is desirable but not essential.
- Hold a degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline (e.g., Power Systems Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Power Electronics), or equivalent experience. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field is advantageous.
- Practical experience working in an electrical engineering role within the energy transition, power, or utilities renewables sectors. Experience with, smart grids, renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, power electronics is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of key electrical engineering concepts relevant to the energy sector (e.g., power systems analysis, power electronics, control systems, grid integration of renewable energy sources, energy storage technologies).
- Exhibit exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to effectively convey complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences, including HMRC representatives and client stakeholders.
- Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, allowing you to quickly understand and interpret technical documentation and identify qualifying R&D activities.
- Demonstrate excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, client-driven environment.
- Thrive in a collaborative team environment, actively contributing your expertise and supporting colleagues to deliver exceptional client service.
