The Team
The Edge team within Foundations underpins the performance, reliability and security of our north/south traffic at the boundary between our global systems and the outside world. The team’s scope includes global traffic routing, content delivery networks, proxies, load-balancing, DNS/routing, network security patterns (WAFs, rate limiting, DDoS mitigation), and internet observability at global scale. You’ll work closely with Product Engineering, Security, SRE and senior engineers across Deliveroo to ensure our traffic path is fast, resilient and secure.
The Role
As an Engineer II on Edge, you are an experienced contributor whose work will impact team-level goals and metrics. You’ll have the skills to take ownership of individual pieces of work and occasionally lead work within the team.
What you’ll do
- Technical Delivery: Deliver high quality work within the Edge domain: design, implement, test and operate systems that handle production traffic reliably and at low latency. Work on traffic-critical initiatives such as multi-region routing, intelligent failover, traffic policy, edge-to-mesh optimisation, CDN & proxy tuning, and DNS/routing improvements. Design robust, well-documented features and write TDDs / design docs that communicate trade-offs and operational considerations.
- Collaboration & Leadership: Participate in the full delivery lifecycle: break down work, guide design and implementation choices, and partner with adjacent teams (SRE, Security, Product) to de-risk delivery. Work with their team and adjacent teams (when relevant) to deliver projects and solve problems. Hold a high bar for the operational readiness for services you ship: define SLOs, ensure high-signal monitoring and low-noise alerting, maintain runbooks, and participate in on-call rotations and post-incident learning.
- Team Building: Actively contributes to positive cultural practices within their team including providing constructive code and design reviews, improving team practices and leading interviews to help raise the engineering bar within the team.
What we’re looking for
We want to emphasise that we don't expect you to meet all of the below but would love you to have experience in some of these areas:
- Pride in readable, well-designed, well-tested solutions and proven ability to ship pieces of work from inception to delivery.
- Hands-on experience with Edge technologies and networking: CDNs (Cloudflare/Fastly), proxies (Nginx/HAProxy), ALB/ELB, DNS (Route53) and VPC routing.
- Technical foundation in distributed systems, platform/infrastructure engineering, cloud networking and production-grade services.
- Experience in low-latency, high-throughput systems and familiarity with infrastructure tooling (Terraform) and languages used by the company (e.g., Go).
- Experience of working closely and building relationships with customer engineering groups.
- Experience driving operational excellence (SLOs, on-call, runbooks, post-incident reviews).
- Excellent communication skills and a track record of working with multiple stakeholders to solve challenging, ambiguous problems.
Required skills: ELB, Go, Network Security, Nginx, Distributed Systems, Terraform, DNS, WAF
Required languages: English
