The Statistics and Analysis Team is a multidisciplinary team of statisticians, GIS specialists and data professionals, enabling the MMO to deliver its statutory obligations and ambitions. As part of the Digital & Analysis Directorate, the Statistics and Analysis Team delivers on multiple fronts; from the publication of Official Statistics and management information, allocating and monitoring fishing quotas, developing evidence and analysis in support of policy development and implementation, contributing to the international evidence base for fisheries and internal reporting for key MMO Services.

As Head of Geospatial and Fisheries Analysis, you will lead a team of GIS specialists and statisticians to deliver high quality evidence and analysis to support the MMO’s implementation of Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), as well as other policy development and implementation. You will play a key role in developing the evidence base for spatial fisheries data, exploiting new data collections and technologies. You will deliver novel analysis that contributes to decision making in marine planning, including potential locations of new wind farms, and their impact on UK fisheries, international negotiations and MMO operations.

You will lead the development and publication of a new official statistics release for spatial fisheries activity data. As well as overseeing methodological development, you will ensure the statistical release is developed and published in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics. You will engage with internal and external stakeholders and users to ensure the statistics are fit for purpose.

You will build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and users, to champion best practice and improve coherence and collaboration with other Government departments that contribute to the spatial fishing activity evidence base. You will also actively manage and prioritise projects to ensure analysis is delivered on time and to the appropriate quality.

You will lead support of MMO-wide mapping services for marine licensing and marine planning, helping roll out the new ArcGIS Enterprise platform. This will expand access to spatial data across the organisation and unlock opportunities to streamline workflows, enable self‑service mapping, and enhance specialist analysis.

You will engage confidently with a wide range of customers and stakeholders, including MMO operational teams, Defra and other Arm’s Length Bodies, the Devolved Governments and industry representatives. You will play a proactive role in the leadership and development of the Statistics and Analysis Team, representing the Chief Statistician when needed.
