The Statistics and Analysis Team is a multidisciplinary team of statisticians, GIS specialists and data professionals, enabling the MMO to deliver its statutory obligations and ambitions. As part of the Digital & Analysis Directorate, the Statistics and Analysis Team delivers on multiple fronts; from the publication of Official Statistics and management information, allocating and monitoring fishing quotas, developing evidence and analysis in support of policy development and implementation, contributing to the international evidence base for fisheries and internal reporting for key MMO Services.

As the Head of Official Statistics Development, you will develop and lead a high-profile programme to improve and expand the MMO’s published statistics offering. Covering all aspects of statistical production, you will ensure the Sea Fisheries Statistics meet the standards of the Code of Practice. You will lead the engagement and assessment with the Office for Statistics Regulation to regain Accredited Official Statistics designation.

You will project manage colleagues from across the Statistics and Analysis Team, developing the skills and expertise required to produce Official Statistics. You will take advantage of available technology to build reproducible analytical pipelines, and to develop the presentation of published statistics, reporting progress to Senior Officials.

You will identify further areas for improvement, including increasing the coherence between the MMO statistics publications and those produced by other organisations. You will build and maintain relationships with all UK fisheries authorities and work together to improve the quality of published statistics.

You will confidently engage with all users of MMO statistics, including operational colleagues, the Devolved Governments and members of the fishing industry, to ensure statistical outputs meet user needs. You will play a leading role in the new Fisheries Data Steering Group. You will work alongside colleagues from across MMO to improve data governance and processes across the organisation, maximising use of data both internally and externally.

You will play a proactive role in the leadership and development of the Statistics and Analysis Team, representing the Chief Statistician when needed.
