Job Description

We're seeking an experienced and driven Electronics Group Leader to lead a high-performing team of electronics engineers. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on involvement in the design, development, and delivery of advanced electronic systems, particularly in high-integrity and defence-related environments. You'll guide your team through complex challenges while contributing to both tactical execution and strategic growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of electronics engineers, creating an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide technical leadership and support, particularly in complex problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Manage the design, development, and testing of electronic systems and components, ensuring timely delivery within budget and aligned with project lifecycles.

  • Define and allocate work packages, manage resources, and proactively identify and mitigate project risks.

  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams to ensure fully integrated solutions.

  • Review and continuously improve engineering practices, documentation, and design standards.

  • Support business development activities by contributing technical input to bids, proposals, and customer queries.

  • Oversee team performance, conducting regular one-to-ones, mentoring sessions, and personal development planning.

  • Contribute to departmental planning, goal setting, and strategy.

  • Identify future resource needs and lead recruitment efforts for the electronics team.

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to ensure the team remains innovative and future-ready.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, regulatory, and industry standards throughout the development process.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline (2:1 or above).

  • Strong hands-on experience in electronics design, including PCB development for high-performance microcontrollers, communications interfaces, power systems, and cabling.

  • Proven line management and leadership experience, ideally within a prototyping or R&D environment.

  • Experience with technical project management and the full product design lifecycle.

  • Knowledge of motion control systems and their electronic architectures.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and guide teams effectively.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to personal and professional development.

  • Familiarity with compliance processes, including CE marking and safety regulations.

  • Experience contributing technical insight to bids and proposals.

  • Previous involvement in recruitment and team-building activities.

  • Understanding of safety considerations in electrical and control systems design.

Desirable:

  • Master's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ years in a technical leadership role.

  • Experience working on electronic systems in a defence or similarly regulated environment.

  • Knowledge of software development lifecycles and their interaction with electronics and systems requirements.

  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles.

  • Experience with EMC testing and associated compliance processes.

  • In-depth knowledge of control theory as applied to electromechanical systems..
