The Role
DIO-Estates have a vacancy for a Senior Estate Surveyor to work within Specialist Teams – Overseas (UK-based) division.
The DIO Senior Estate Surveyor for Remote Overseas and Overseas Training Estate will be UK-based but with responsibility for providing all DIO Estates outputs across a range of overseas locations including Kenya, Nepal, Belize, Falkland Islands and Brunei.
The role requires close collaboration with military and civilian colleagues in each host country and around the MOD to secure the grant, review, administration or surrender of assets (principally residential accommodation and land either used for military training or bases abroad). These are typically either held from local private individuals and organisations, or via an inter-government arrangement and experience from a general or rural practice background will be readily transferable.
Acting as a professional, in house real-estate consultant with power of attorney of the Secretary of State for Defence to execute property transactions in overseas jurisdictions, this is a role which offers a truly unique and exciting combination of opportunities which do not occur in a ‘run of the mill’ property role, combining the benefits of being UK based but with the likelihood of occasional (fully supported) travel to these locations.
The candidate will have exposure to a uniquely diverse and unusual range of asset types across multiple countries and cultures, requiring both a technical and non-technical approach and an organised, inquisitive and expeditionary mindset.
The Senior Estate Surveyor will have support from, and line management responsibility for a UK-based Estate Surveyor to assist in the delivery of this important overseas infrastructure portfolio.
This is an exciting opportunity to join and lead our nationwide network of highly skilled Surveyors, and we are looking for motivated suitability qualified property professional to join an established team, working closely with military and civilian colleges delivering exciting, varied estate activities, programmes, and subject matter professional advice.

Job Description
Main Responsibilities
All Senior Surveyor roles within Estates oversee and manage a wide range of programmes and services alongside the provision of subject matter expert advice and communications with all key stakeholders.
The work is extremely varied and wide ranging, but key activities for this role will include:
- Acquisition and management of leasehold interests in accommodation for the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) where there are currently over 100 leased properties in Nairobi and Nanyuki and over 40 hirings in Kathmandu for British Ghurkhas Nepal (BGN) to include negotiation of lease events (renewals, rent reviews etc) and administration of payments.
- Procurement and administration of licences to conduct military training exercises on private land extending to more than 500,000ac within Kenya and Belize – plus other unusual land assets as demand dictates.
- Executing licences for commercial or casual occupation of the overseas Estate by third parties.
- Advise on and undertake one-off projects such as acquisition of Freehold property or negotiation of property compensation claims on behalf of Ministry of Defence including establishment of the military customer user statement of need, securing approval via the submission of a business case and successful negotiation and execution of the military requirement to ensure optimum and timely outcomes.
- Monitoring of and real-estate input on executive level inter-government Memoranda of Understanding/Implementing Arrangements and Defence Cooperation Agreements.
- Preparation and implementation of a bi-annual programme business case for delivery of c.£5M annual business outputs.
- Overseeing the effective administration of property records and timely transactional programme delivery.
- Support other areas within the same team where need arises, such as operations and other specialist teams’ delivery locations such as Germany, Cyprus, Gibraltar and global operations.

Essential Experience:
Relevant, suitable experience and knowledge at an appropriate level in General or Rural Estate Management of a wide and varied portfolio, including:
- Landlord and Tenant
- Property Valuation
