As a Storage & Backup Engineer, you will own the backup and storage estate across EMEA and beyond, ensuring data protection and availability for a major financial services group. Youβll shape roadmaps and architecture standards, drive backup success, and manage capacity to support growth. The role combines hands-on administration with strategic oversight, including governance, risk and DR readiness. You will act as a SME for storage and backup, and may take on team leadership responsibilities over time.
Responsibilities
- Take technical ownership of online and offline storage and backup technologies across EMEA and beyond.
- Design, implement, and administer data backup systems with patching and vendor-aligned maintenance.
- Monitor backup success rates, diagnose failures, and drive improvements.
- Ensure backups meet policy, retention, and reliable restore timelines.
- Maintain SLA/KPI compliance, high availability, and IT risk/security controls.
- Manage capacity and roadmap for upgrades and legacy rationalisation.
- Contribute storage components to change programmes and support audits and BCP/DR readiness.
- Act as SME consultancy for other teams and identify automation opportunities.
- Deputise for Head of Storage on people management and workload prioritisation.
Key requirements
- Minimum 5 years' experience with enterprise backup solutions, specifically Dell EMC NetWorker and Rubrik.
- Hands-on expertise with EMC Unity, EMC Isilon, EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) and Cisco SAN switches.
- Strong Red Hat Linux skills and experience with Kemp load balancers.
- Track record of running storage and backup platforms in mission-critical environments with emphasis on availability and restore reliability.
- Comfort working within an IT risk and control framework including audits and privileged access control.
Desirable: experience with databases, networking, VMware, Windows/Active Directory; capacity to manage team workload; experience in financial services or regulated environments.
