What the job involves

  • We’re growing our engineering team following the commercial success we’ve had this year and to help with that we’re looking for an experienced VP of Engineering.
  • You’ll be reporting to the CTO, helping to guide the strategy, growth and execution of the team.
  • Mentoring and coaching the senior and lead engineers to grow their technical and soft skills.
  • Driving observability, reliability, stability and scalability as concepts within the organisation and establishing the metrics, SLAs and OKRs that ensure they’re achieved.
  • Audit ways of working, technical capabilities, looking for optimisations or overhauls if necessary and leading improvement programmes.
  • Defining the new roles that will enable the team to execute even faster and more effectively, as well as running the hiring process, from application, offer to onboarding.
  • Shaping the product and engineering roadmap and seeing initiatives through from conception to delivery while ensuring engineering capacity, sequencing, trade-offs and cross-team alignment are managed at an organisational level.
  • Owning and evolving the engineering org structure, career framework and performance management processes.
  • Partnering with the CTO and leadership team on budgeting, headcount planning and long-term technical investments.
  • On the frontend we’re using React, Next.js and TypeScript. On the backend we use Golang to serve RESTful and gRPC APIs running on Kubernetes. Our mobile apps have been built natively from the ground up using Swift and Kotlin. We use GitHub for version control and CI, Jira for tracking tasks and Slack for sending cat GIFs.
  • Overseeing and helping define the technical architecture at a strategic level, ensuring alignment with business goals and long-term platform evolution.
  • Providing technical leadership and able to be hands on and in the detail when needed.
  • Line management, mentoring and coaching the other engineers.
  • Running the hiring process for new engineers.
  • Reviewing other engineer’s code, making suggestions and using them as teaching opportunities for more advanced techniques.
  • Spotting the gaps in technical capabilities or resources and filling them at the right time.
  • Working closely with the product, marketing and sales teams to bring their visions to life while balancing innovation, delivery velocity, technical debt and platform sustainability.
  • Owning engineering delivery performance: throughput, predictability, quality and operational excellence.
  • Championing a strong engineering culture, values and ways of working as the organisation scales.
