What the job involves

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead some of our product development teams, responsible for the day‑to‑day people leadership, delivery, and technical execution of complex, business‑critical software. This role will focus on building high‑performing teams, delivering reliable outcomes, and ensuring engineering excellence within a regulated, data‑intensive product environment. You and your team will be key service owners for elements of the Product architecture, accountable for balancing feature development with architectural and operational improvements. You will mentor development and quality engineers, partner closely with Product, Architecture, and Operations, and translate roadmap priorities into predictable, high‑quality delivery. While not a hands‑on coding role, a strong technical background is crucial to guide design decisions, challenge assumptions, and support the team. This role will report to a Senior Engineering Manager, and be a key member of the World Check One engineering leadership team. The role will be based in our Nottingham engineering centre of excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop multi-functional engineering teams (typically 6–10 FTE, supplemented with vendors)
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance evaluations, and career development planning
  • Develop a culture of accountability, psychological safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement
  • Support engineers’ growth in technical, delivery, and behavioural competencies
  • Provide technical guidance on system design, architecture changes, and implementation approaches
  • Ensure solutions align with platform standards, security requirements, and regulatory obligations
  • Promote modern engineering practices including clean code, automated testing, observability, and resilience
  • Partner with Architects and Principal Engineers on technical direction while ensuring team understanding and agreement
  • Support incident response and post‑incident learning, driving sustainable fixes
  • Collaborate with Product and Delivery Management to break down roadmap initiatives into clear, achievable plans
  • Ensure effective agile ways of working (Scrum/Kanban), adapting practices as needed for real‑world delivery
  • Manage dependencies, risks, and trade‑offs, calling out appropriately to the wider management team for support
  • Balance feature delivery with technical health, operational stability, and cloud efficiency
  • Act as the engineering point of contact for your teams' scope
  • Work closely with Product, SRE/Operations, and Security teams
  • Communicate progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to interested parties and leadership
  • Lead and contribute to broader engineering initiatives and communities of practice across the engineering department
