Meet DeepL. DeepL is a global AI product and research company focused on building secure, intelligent solutions to complex business problems. Over 200,000 business customers and millions of individuals across 228 global markets today trust DeepL's Language AI platform for human-like translation, improved writing, and real-time voice translation.

Founded in 2017 by CEO Jaroslaw “Jarek” Kutylowski, DeepL now has around 1,000 passionate employees and is supported by world-renowned investors including Benchmark, IVP, and Index Ventures. Our goal is to become the global leader in trusted, intelligent AI technology, building products that drive better communication, foster connections, and create a meaningful impact. To achieve this, we need talented people like you to join our journey.

What sets us apart is our blend of cutting-edge AI technology, meaningful work, and a culture where people truly thrive. We’re a team of innovators, researchers, and creators driven by a shared purpose to unlock human potential by making work simpler, smarter, and more connected.

The Acceleration team is a software engineering function within DeepL's Enterprise organisation, responsible for the internal platforms and automation that power DeepL's commercial operations. We own the systems that keep our commercial workflows running reliably, and we build the tooling that lets teams across the business move faster and operate more independently.

Your Responsibilities

  • Own the engineering delivery of the team — set the pace, hold the bar, and remove blockers to ensure consistent, predictable output across active development and ongoing system ownership.
  • Partner with Product and commercial stakeholders to define and maintain a prioritised roadmap, balancing strategic product investment against the steady-state ownership of a critical internal tooling estate.
  • Build and develop a high-performing team — hire deliberately, onboard engineers with care, grow talent through structured development conversations, and manage performance directly when needed.
  • Represent your team's delivery health and technical direction to senior stakeholders across the business, establishing yourself as a credible engineering partner to leadership.
  • Maintain technical engagement at the right level: make sound architectural trade-off decisions, enable your engineers to do their best work, and stay close enough to the system to identify risk early.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment across GTM, Sales, Finance, Product, and platform engineering — build the working relationships that reduce friction and unlock fast, independent delivery.
  • Shape the team's operating cadence — ceremonies, planning, feedback loops — in a way that matches the pace and complexity of the work without adding unnecessary overhead.
  • Identify and escalate risks early, with a clear point of view on what needs to change.

Qualities We Look For

  • Proven track record as an Engineering Manager with direct line management of engineers building complex software products in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong delivery instincts — you have established or rebuilt delivery cadences on teams that needed them, and you know how to maintain velocity when priorities shift.
  • Technical credibility: you engage comfortably in architectural and system design conversations, your engineers trust your technical judgement, and you are not a pure process manager.
  • Experience navigating cross-functional stakeholder complexity — you translate engineering trade-offs into commercial language and push back constructively on scope creep.
  • A thoughtful, deliberate approach to people leadership — you hire with intention, develop engineers systematically, and address underperformance with directness and care.
  • Comfort managing concurrent workstreams of different types — you can hold both active product development and ongoing system maintenance without either drifting, and you make deliberate trade-off decisions when priorities compete.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and evolving context — you bring structure without imposing rigidity.
  • A background in B2B SaaS or any environment where engineering decisions have direct commercial or operational impact is welcome.

What we offer

  • Diverse and internationally distributed team: joining our team means becoming part of a large, global community with people of more than 90 nationalities.
  • Open communication, regular feedback: as a language-focused company, we value the importance of clear, honest communication.
  • Hybrid work, flexible hours: we offer a hybrid work schedule, with team members coming into the office twice a week.
  • Virtual Shares - An ownership mindset in every role.
  • Regular in-person team events: we bond over vibrant events that are as unique as our team.
  • Monthly full-day hacking sessions: every month, we have Hack Fridays, where you can spend your time diving into a project you're passionate about.
  • 30 days of annual leave: we value your peace of mind.
  • Competitive benefits: we've crafted it to reflect the diversity of our team and tailored it to align with your unique location.

If this role and our mission resonate with you, but you're hesitant because you don't check all the boxes, don't let that hold you back. At DeepL, it's all about the value you bring and the growth we can foster together.

We are an equal opportunity employer. You are welcome at DeepL for who you are - we appreciate authenticity here.

How to prepare for a job interview at DeepL

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If DeepL uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
