We are seeking a skilled CNC Operator with strong experience in programming, setting and operating 5-axis CNC machining centres to implement and embed our CNC capabilities. The role supports our advanced manufacturing operations for pressure vessel components where precision, quality and process reliability are paramount. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, production and quality teams to machine high-integrity parts to exact specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Program 5-axis CNC machines using CAM software (PowerMill, Fusion 360) based on engineering drawings and CAD models
  • Set up 5-axis CNC machining centres from scratch, including fixtures, tools, work offsets, probing routines, and verification checks
  • Operate and monitor machines to ensure consistent, reliable machining of additive manufactured components
  • Select appropriate tooling, work holding, and machining strategies to meet dimensional accuracy and surface finish requirements
  • Optimise toolpaths and machining parameters to reduce cycle times and improve productivity
  • Develop robust machining processes for new and existing components, ensuring repeatability, efficiency, and traceability
  • Create standard operating procedures (SOPs), set-up sheets, and best-practice guidelines for 5-axis machining of pressure-vessel components
  • Embed and implement these processes on the shop floor, training colleagues and ensuring compliance across shifts or teams
  • Continuously assess and refine machining methods, workflows, and documentation to support operational excellence
  • Collaborate with engineering and additive manufacturing teams to ensure smooth integration between printed parts and CNC finishing processes
  • Interpret technical drawings, models, GD&T requirements, and production specifications
  • Provide technical input into fixture design, tooling selection, and process improvement initiatives
  • Conduct in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools; CMM experience an advantage
  • Ensure all machined components meet the stringent quality and safety standards expected for pressure vessel applications
  • Maintain accurate production records, inspection data, and traceability documentation
  • Identify and resolve machining deviations or non-conformances
  • Perform routine machine maintenance, calibration checks, and tool management
  • Drive continuous improvement through tooling optimisation, process enhancements, and workflow efficiency projects
  • Participate in lean manufacturing initiatives to reduce waste and improve overall productivity

Qualifications

  • Proven experience programming and operating 5-axis CNC machining centres (3–5 years preferred)
  • Strong competence in machine set-up, tool selection and fixturing methods
  • Demonstrated experience developing or standardising machining processes
  • Ability to create clear set-up documentation, SOPs and machining standards
  • Familiarity with machining high-integrity parts (aerospace, energy, pressure systems)
  • Strong understanding of CAD/CAM tools, GD&T and precision measurement equipment
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with additive manufacturing workflows or hybrid processes
  • Knowledge of high performance alloys and their machining characteristics
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot tooling process or machine issues
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to train others

Benefits

  • Salary – competitive
  • Bonus – performance related bonus scheme
  • Pension – 9% employer contribution with optional employee contribution
  • Annual Leave – 25 days plus statutory holidays
  • Lunch – free lunch and breakfast onsite with snacks
