We are seeking a highly skilled Welding Engineer to join our multidisciplinary production team. The role provides welding engineering leadership and technical support across structural fabrication, pressure vessels for human occupancy, and WAAM processes. You will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and optimising welding procedures, ensuring compliance with industry and regulatory standards, and supporting continuous improvement of production capabilities. This role involves close collaboration with design, production, quality, and R&I teams to deliver high-integrity components that meet stringent customer and certification requirements (e.g. ASME, DNV, API, ISO).
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, test, qualify, and optimise welding and WAAM procedures for ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
- Design and refine welding parameters for different materials, geometries, and production methods, including automated and robotic welding systems.
- Lead welding procedure qualification activities to support current and future production requirements.
Technical Support & Production Collaboration
- Provide expert guidance on welding processes, materials, and techniques.
- Support fabrication of structural components and pressure vessels, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and project requirements.
- Troubleshoot welding and WAAM-related issues, implementing corrective and preventive actions.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Monitor weld quality through inspections and testing (visual, dimensional, and NDT such as MPI and DPI).
- Identify defects, investigate root causes, and report findings to internal stakeholders.
- Assist in the preparation of welding repair procedures in compliance with industry standards.
- Support internal and external audits related to welding and additive manufacturing activities.
Documentation & Standards
- Prepare, review, and maintain welding documentation, including WPS, WPQR/PQR, welder qualifications, and technical records.
- Ensure welding documentation is clear, compliant, and effectively communicated to manufacturing and quality teams.
- Ensure adherence to relevant standards and codes (e.g. ASME IX, DNV, API, ISO 9606, ISO 14731, ISO 15614, ISO 3834-2, EN 1090).
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Conduct routine audits of welding processes to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Investigate emerging welding, additive manufacturing, automation, and monitoring technologies.
- Collaborate with R&I to evaluate new materials, consumables, and processes that enhance quality, efficiency, and sustainability.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Degree (or equivalent) in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Recognised Welding Institute qualification (International Welding Technologist or above).
- Comprehensive knowledge for welding co‑ordination responsibilities.
- Demonstrable experience with welding processes used in pressure vessel and structural fabrication.
- Proven experience developing and qualifying welding procedures.
- CSWIP Visual Welding Inspector (or higher).
Preferred / Desirable Experience
- Experience with WAAM or other metal additive manufacturing technologies.
- Knowledge of pressure vessel and fabrication standards (e.g. ASME BPVC, DNV, API).
- Familiarity with robotic welding systems and automation.
- Background in aerospace, defence, marine, or oil & gas sectors.
