Who we are:

The Red Shed Project has a beautiful, dementia friendly garden on a quiet and peaceful site in Stevenage. Our horticultural specialists, supported by a team of volunteers, provide a wide range of garden-based activities and experiences for people living with dementia and their carers. Our aim is to improve physical and mental wellbeing, alleviate loneliness and reduce isolation.

We run several Garden Clubs throughout the week, enabling our participants to enjoy the well acknowledged benefits of gardening in a relaxed and safe environment. We network and work with a wide range of other organisations and by doing this, we are involved more broadly in the development of services for this group of people and in research.

Our garden is well established, well supported by the community and valued by our participants, who also have a say as stakeholders in the development of the services we offer them. We are now actively planning for our expansion, initially through the development of our services on a second site in Welwyn Garden City.

We are seeking two new enthusiastic trustees who will bring a range of skills to our current team and get involved at an exciting stage of the development and expansion of our services.

Our trustees meet approximately every eight weeks with the CEO in attendance. We support the CEO in the project’s strategic development and have a range of duties including - but not exclusively – monitoring our financial position and ensuring compliance with our governing document and the law. Additionally, trustees may get involved in the practical running of the project. Some volunteer at Garden Clubs or in maintaining the site; some represent The Red Shed Project at outside events or attend events we organise for our participants and the wider community; others contribute to task-based working groups and bring their professional skills and expertise to the smooth running and development of our services.

What we offer you:

If you joined our Board, you would become a valued member of a positive, enthusiastic team and have the opportunity to be a part of a project that makes a huge difference to the lives of some of the growing numbers of people impacted by dementia. We would offer the opportunity for training and you would have the support of members of the Board.

Our future development and your role in it:

If you are excited by the prospect of being involved in the work of the Red Shed and its expansion to other sites in Hertfordshire, and you also have skills or experience that would help us move forward, please do get in touch. We are particularly interested in hearing from people with finance / fundraising experience and are also looking to expand our Welwyn Garden City links. But this is not an exclusive list – if you feel that your experience makes you an ideal candidate, we would be delighted to hear from you.

If we feel from your initial application that you could be a good match then we may ask for a full CV and also invite you to visit the Red Shed in Stevenage. References will also be requested. All trustees need to be able to complete the Charity Commission Trustee Eligibility Declaration and, depending on the sort of activities you choose to get involved with, a DBS Certificate may need to be applied for.

Responsibilities:

  • Trustees meet approximately every eight weeks with the CEO in attendance.
  • Support the CEO in the project’s strategic development.
  • Monitor our financial position and ensure compliance with our governing document and the law.
  • Trustees may get involved in the practical running of the project, including volunteering at Garden Clubs or maintaining the site.
  • Represent The Red Shed Project at outside events or attend events organized for participants and the wider community.
  • Contribute to task-based working groups and bring professional skills and expertise to the smooth running and development of services.
