Modern life has moved largely online, leaving many people feeling behind with appointments, banking, forms, shopping, messages from family, and local groups and community updates. For many, it isn't that they can't use technology; it's that one small problem becomes another, confidence drops, and everyday tasks start feeling stressful or overwhelming.
Staying Connected supports people across North Herts and Stevenage through friendly, local digital support sessions that help individuals feel more confident, connected, and independent. We're looking for patient, friendly volunteers to join our Digital Champion team at weekly community hub sessions in Letchworth.
What will you be doing?
- Helping someone log into the NHS App
- Accessing appointments or important forms
- Understanding emails, messages, or notifications
- Learning how to video-call family and friends
- Using a smartphone, tablet, or laptop more confidently
- Accessing online shopping, banking, or local services safely
- Feeling calmer and less stuck with everyday digital tasks
Some people will need practical support, while others simply need someone patient beside them while they work things through. Sessions are relaxed, social, and community-based. You won't be expected to fix complex tech problems or have advanced IT knowledge.
What are the hub sessions like?
Our hub sessions take place within existing community groups and social sessions across North Herts and Stevenage. People can drop in for support in a friendly, informal environment where conversations happen naturally over tea, coffee, and everyday interaction. The role is as much about reassurance, patience, and confidence-building as it is about technology.
We're looking for people who are:

If you can use email, apps, internet browsing, and basic digital services—and explain things without rushing people—you'll probably be a great fit.
Support and training
You will receive:
- Introductory training in digital support and safeguarding
- Ongoing guidance and support from the Staying Connected team and fellow Digital Champions
- Resources to help you feel confident in the role
You'll never be expected to manage difficult technical issues alone.

When and where
We're looking for cover at our Letchworth sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday from 10-12. Most volunteers support 1–2 hours per week at a regular weekly hub session, although every other week is possible.
The Staying Connected project seeks to eradicate digital poverty throughout Hertfordshire. Staying Connected provides free laptops, tablets, and mobile phones to people in need in North Herts and Stevenage. We also offer free training and six-month SIM cards to help people stay connected, access healthcare, and improve their lives.
