Job Summary: Serve as a Paramedic on a Specialty Care Team at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA, delivering advanced critical care to adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients during high-acuity inter-facility transports and emergency operations. This role requires expert clinical judgment, proficiency with advanced procedures and specialized equipment, and close collaboration with medical teams to ensure safe, continuous care across transport, emergency, and hospital settings.
Required Qualifications
- Degree/Education: Certificate, Graduate from an accredited NREMT program. Possess and maintain certification as an NREMT, NRAEMT, NRP from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or applicable state EMT certification.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support for Health Care Providers certification (PALS).
- Licensure/Registration: Valid license to operate any Emergency Vehicle/Ambulance.
- Experience: Twelve (12) months of experience as an NR-P after graduation.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a Paramedic on a Specialty Care Team (SCT), providing specialized care utilizing critical care skills and intensive observational monitoring techniques to assess patient condition and provide an advanced level of specialized care to all critically ill patients (surgical, medical and pediatrics).
- Conduct long distance inter-facility critical care patient transfers to include critical care transport to higher level of care hospitals and medical centers.
- Administer critical care drugs as necessary with knowledge of monitoring and infusion equipment, effects, side effects, dosages, and dose calculations due to potency and potential for serious complications.
- Operate specialized medical equipment such as resuscitators, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, oxygen apparatus, intravenous pumps, rapid intravenous infusers, and ventilation devices.
- Administer oxygen, intravenous (IV) fluids, blood transfusions and all types of medications during emergent events by various routes (IV, intraosseous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, by mouth, rectal).
- Calculate dosages, observe and treat adverse reactions, and document administration of medications per established charting procedures.
- Perform complex or potentially life-threatening procedures such as Rapid Sequence Induction, cardioversion and surgical cricothyrotomy.
- Provide treatment of traumatic injuries and mobilize for transport.
- Provide pediatric and OB care by performing an advanced assessment and treatment of the pediatric patient, performing emergency childbirth and treatment of predelivery complications and provide newborn resuscitation.
- Inventory all supplies and equipment. After each patient call, replace linens and supplies; check and disinfect reusable equipment; send supplies for sterilization as required and ensure ambulance is sanitary and ready for the next run.
- Prepare patient and vehicle documentation and reports to meet medical requirements.
- When not performing other duties, assist in providing care in the Emergency Department within scope of practice, including patient assessment, medication administration by various routes, obtaining blood samples, IV access and intubation.
Work Environment & Schedule
24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including holidays. Typical shifts may include 0600-1800, 1500-2300, 2200-0600 and 1800-0600. Located at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA.
