Overview
We are looking for a Principal Technologist to lead the design and evolution of our best-in‑class data science and analytics learning programmes. Our Principal Technologist will be a Data science and analytics domain knowledge expert who is passionate about architecting modern learning experiences. This role combines deep technical expertise in modern data science and analytics, with high‑level pedagogical leadership. You will lead the curriculum design that spans the full data lifecycle, with an explicit focus on Modern Data Analytics/science, specifically MLOps (operationalising analytics) and the use of Large Language Models to drive insights. You will ensure our content remains at the cutting edge by integrating these technologies into the learner journey for the Level 4 Data Analyst standard and L3 Data Technician standard. You will be responsible for its quality, relevance, performance, and continuous improvement. You will work across multiple stakeholders (commercial, product, LXD, clients, and delivery teams) to define, build, and deliver impactful learning experiences. You will also manage a small team of instructors/SMEs, ensuring high standards of execution and continuous development.
Accountabilities
As a Principal Technologist at Decoded, you will be responsible for:
- Subject Matter Authority: Acting as a primary internal authority for Data Science and Analytics, ensuring technical accuracy, relevance, and industry alignment across all programmes.
- Product Ownership: Acting as the end‑to‑end owner of learning products, designing systemic educational solutions – such as internal AI tools or automated grading processes, to solve delivery challenges at scale.
- Design: Designing, developing, and continuously improving high‑quality, production‑ready learning content.
- Teaching: Delivering engaging, high‑impact workshops to adult learners in virtual classrooms.
- Line Management: Providing pedagogical coaching and line management to the Analytics team.
- Commercial Leadership: Leading the pedagogical scoping and educational narrative for commercial bids, working alongside sales and operational teams to ensure technical deliverables are feasible.
- Project Management: Managing the end‑to‑end delivery cycle of complex learning projects, ensuring all technical and pedagogical milestones are met.
Specific Roles & Responsibilities
Your specific responsibilities are:
- Own the full lifecycle of a learning product: discovery, design, build, delivery, iteration, and optimisation.
- Act as the subject matter authority in data science/analytics, ensuring technical accuracy, relevance, and industry alignment.
- Lead the technical scoping and pricing for major bids in partnership with sales and operational teams.
- Define and uphold quality standards for all content, including technical correctness, clarity, and learner outcomes.
- Proactively identify gaps, inconsistencies, or risks in content and resolve them end‑to‑end.
- Partner with Product and Commercial teams to shape solutions that meet client and learner needs, leading the technical scoping for new programmes.
- Own relationships with internal stakeholders (LXD, Product, Delivery) and external client stakeholders.
- Architect the high‑level technical narrative for Level 4 standards to ensure they remain at the cutting edge.
Quality of facilitation
- Achieve teaching quality scores that meet or exceed quality indicators.
- Lead sandbox validation and testing of new teaching technologies before they are rolled out to the wider faculty.
- Deliver high‑value pilots and novel technical sessions for key clients.
- Decode and communicate complex concepts and principles with energy, focus and patience.
- Facilitate the learning journey for your audience, leaving no one behind while also providing stimulation for advanced learners.
- Learn about your learners and the businesses they work for.
- Define and manage resources and assets for products and programmes you own, proactively filling gaps in your knowledge.
- Maintain a continual learning mindset and strive to advance your knowledge in your specialist domains.
Line Management
- Provide direct line management to instructors and SMEs, including goal setting, performance reviews, and ongoing career development planning.
- Foster a high‑performance, inclusive team culture by addressing performance issues, recognising achievements, and promoting accountability and collaboration.
- Act as an escalation point for people‑related matters, resolving conflicts, supporting wellbeing, and ensuring adherence to organisational policies and standards.
- Support resource planning and allocation, ensuring the team is effectively staffed, prioritised, and aligned with strategic objectives.

You will report into the Portfolio Director, Data Analytics, in the Product Department.

Core Requirements
- Experienced in designing and delivering technical learner‑centric training programmes.
- A data science / analytics subject matter expert with strong practical experience.
- Confident coding in Python and familiar with AI copilots for code generation and AutoML Python libraries.
- Deep technical knowledge of the data analytics lifecycle, including advanced Python, SQL, and practical use of Large Language Models in Data Analytics.
- Understanding how to teach the transition from basic code to production‑grade analytics.
- Able to own complex workstreams independently, from definition through to delivery.
- A strong communicator who can simplify complex ideas without losing accuracy.
- Highly organised, detail‑oriented, and reliable in execution.
- Comfortable working across multiple stakeholders and priorities.
- Always keen to learn, improve and stretch your own knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Desirable Skills
- Exposure to data engineering or software development practices.
- Experience developing apprenticeship programmes.
- Experience in line management or mentoring.
- Experience with Excel, PowerBI, and Power Automate.
- Familiar with semantic data modelling.
- Experience with cloud‑based platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and familiarity with heavier technical engineering items such as Infrastructure as Code via Terraform or large‑scale Data tools like Spark.

We run a dedicated learning calendar to hone craft skills in teaching, leadership, strategy and other relevant disciplines.
Day to Day
This role can be delivered fully remote, provided the working location has consistently reliable Wifi for workshop delivery and up to 2 hours +/- GMT. The Decoded office in London Shoreditch is available for non‑workshop delivery work. You will work from 9am - 5pm. When required, you may need to travel to your learners’ workplaces to deliver in‑person workshops which are delivered in a variety of locations particularly in London and across Europe.
