Deafblind Scotland is a specialist charity working with adults living with dual sensory loss and other sensory impairments. We support people in regaining confidence and communication skills, enabling them to lead meaningful lives.

Responsibilities

  • Support carers affected by sensory loss to access their rights, enhancing their quality of life.
  • Conduct needs assessments and provide ongoing person‑centred monitoring and support planning.
  • Assist carers to access and apply for benefits and other allowances.
  • Research peer support groups, carer centres, respite care, etc.
  • Provide appropriate and timely advice, information and advocacy support.
  • Carry out home visits and liaise with and make referrals to other agencies.
  • Raise awareness of the needs and rights of carers affected by sensory impairment.
  • Collect and record data, maintain accurate records and support the project’s monitoring and evaluation strategy.
  • Coordinate day‑to‑day activities of the project, liaising with language service professionals to support inclusive communication.
  • Work with the Senior Programme Leader and colleagues to build relationships and networking opportunities with local organisations.
  • Undertake and complete relevant training courses.
  • Support general advocacy, advice, and information work relating to carers in Fife.
  • Support development of wellbeing activities for carers.
  • Prepare reports for the Senior Programme Leader and contribute to reporting to Head of Operations, Board and funders.
  • Maintain a steady flow of information to the Senior Programme Leader.
  • Other tasks as required by the Chief Executive, Head of Operations and Head of Finance.

Qualifications

  • Experience of developing projects and achieving project objectives.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and report‑writing skills.
  • Flexible attitude suited to working for a small charity.
  • Ability to interact with people at all levels inclusively and take a person‑centred approach.
  • Experience/knowledge of working in an enabling role with carers and/or people with a disability or sensory loss.
  • Knowledge of general advocacy and welfare rights, focusing on carers’ rights.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to organise time effectively and work on own initiative.
  • Willingness to travel across Fife and have a driving licence and vehicle with business insurance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Desirable Qualities

  • British Sign Language skills or enthusiasm to learn BSL and about deafblind people and their needs.
  • Knowledge of managing budgets.
  • Understanding of the policy landscape in Scotland as it affects carers and sensory impairment.
  • Knowledge of Fife area and services available.
