Job Purpose: To design, deliver, assess and quality assure British Sign Language (BSL) modules for Polylang, ensuring high standards in line with programme and University requirements.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Designing, delivering and evaluating BSL teaching to a high standard.
- Creating engaging independent learning materials and populating the Blackboard (VLE) site.
- Designing formative and summative assessments aligned to module outcomes.
- Marking, moderating, and providing feedback in accordance with University of Westminster regulations.
- Reflecting on and evaluating teaching practice, identifying areas for enhancement.
- Supporting the course and module leadership team (e.g. mentoring tutors, preparing materials for External Examiners, contributing to Welcome Week).
- Attending Polylang meetings and contributing to programme development.
- Engaging in scholarly activity to maintain and develop expertise in language teaching and learning, and to contribute to the wider HE community.
- Undertaking additional duties appropriate to the grade of the post.
Context and Dimensions: The role involves initial responsibility for a Grade 1 BSL module, with teaching load dependent on student enrolment. All post holders are expected to maintain awareness of health and safety responsibilities and associated risks within their working environment.

Essential Criteria:
- A good honours degree (or equivalent experience).
- Native or near-native fluency in British Sign Language, typically evidenced by a Level 6 qualification (or equivalent), with strong knowledge of Deaf culture.
- Proven ability to teach BSL at undergraduate level.
- Experience of designing teaching and assessment materials.
- Experience using digital technologies and virtual learning environments (e.g. Blackboard).
- Strong communication skills in both BSL and written English, including working effectively with interpreters where required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with students and colleagues.
- Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, with the ability to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Ability to manage workload, prioritise, and meet deadlines.
Desirable Criteria:
- Postgraduate qualification in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent).
- Awareness of current trends in language teaching.
- Experience creating digital learning resources and sourcing online teaching tools.
