This is a 6 month Fixed Term Contract opportunity. The strategy of Anglo American is to secure, develop and operate a portfolio of high quality and long life resource assets to deliver leading shareholder returns. The Corporate Affairs discipline ensures that Anglo American stands out as a trusted leader in responsible mining that unlocks long‑term value for society by effectively managing political risk; engaging proactively and meaningfully with all relevant stakeholders to shape both their opinions and public policy outcomes; rallying employees around the company’s ambitions to help build a high performance culture; and protecting and strengthening its global reputation and brand.

This role is a maternity cover expected to last six (6) months starting from July to December 2026, with a possibility of extension early 2027. An overlap period with the incumbent from mid‑June to end‑July is preferred.

Purpose

The purpose of this role is to support the Vice President, Government & International Relations: US, LATAM & Africa to strengthen Anglo American´s strategic position and reputation in LATAM to support business continuity, investment and growth optionality. In pursuit of this purpose, this maternity cover will support the functional oversight and analysis of political and policy developments in LATAM, including advocacy on agreed topics of commercial and reputational benefit, through the development of strategic partnerships and positive relationships with those governments, international institutions, other multilateral organisations and civil society. This role also works as a business partner to Anglo American’s businesses in Chile, Peru and Brazil, and supports ELT members’ government and multilateral engagement in the countries of responsibility. This role also includes a specific focus on the group’s policy advocacy relating to critical minerals.

The Work

  • Lead implementation of advocacy strategies for agreed topics of commercial and reputational benefit for deployment in countries of responsibility, in particular relating to critical minerals.
  • Support implementation for Board and ELT engagements with government and multilaterals in countries of responsibility (in partnership with country GR teams in Chile, Brazil and Peru).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on geo‑political monitoring for countries of responsibility: identify threats and opportunities presented by trends in the international relations space; includes providing advice to the Board, ELT and business ExCos on engagement and management strategies in response to those trends and development of corporate policies.
  • Support engagements (including memberships/partnerships) with key LATAM‑based and LATAM‑focused multilateral organisations, think tanks and other civil society stakeholders to support the delivery of Anglo American’s strategy (e.g. UN, Inter‑American Development Bank, World Bank / International Finance Corporation), as well as NGOs.
  • Work as business partner to Anglo American’s GR teams in Chile, Peru and Brazil, to support best practice and consistent application of the company’s GR policy and planning processes.
  • Support country government relations planning, working with country GR leads in countries of responsibility.

Qualifications Knowledge & Skills

  • Extensive external stakeholder network.
  • Experience of navigating multiple legislative landscape.
  • Policy‑level understanding of climate change and the energy transition.
  • Strong ability to synthesise the impact of evolving policy and regulatory trends on a business environment.
  • Establish detailed processes and policies for issue and crisis management.
  • Strategic approach to campaigning on issues.
  • Work with the extractives industries and knowledge of the principal issues affecting the sector.
  • Prepare and implement policies and frameworks that shape the global and micro policy environment.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese is preferable.
