The purpose of Anglo American Marketing is to sustainably maximise cash flows from the marketing of Anglo American products and services. In support of this, we have set ourselves a target to deliver a considerable uplift in value.

The Financial Trading team is aiming to deliver additional value by implementing strategies to exploit opportunities through asset-backed refined copper and zinc trading, third party physical metals trading, and financial trading across the base metals complex. The aim of our trading strategy is to become one of the top base metals trading businesses in the world within the next 5 years, in terms of volume and profit generation.

In order to achieve our ambitious goals, we will leverage our equity production, our client relationships and our network/sales operations activities. The task of building up and growing this business could be seen as one of the most exciting and challenging tasks in the mining/trading industries.

Job Description:

Purpose

  • Discover, identify, analyse, execute, manage, and monetize dislocations and mispricing, in both physical and financial base metals markets.
  • Define and execute metals trading strategy, capturing the best possible value for metals trading for Anglo American Marketing Limited.
  • Partner the development and implementation of the global metals trading strategy.
  • This role is also responsible for continuously exploring business opportunities with additional market counterparties, and training and supporting new joiners to the base metals division.

Key Responsibilities include

  • Leadership
    • Effectively manage and support the personal and professional development of direct/indirect reports and liaisons and ensure team achievement of agreed business targets.
    • Initiate working relationships beyond immediate team, fostering cross-commodity collaboration, innovation and synergies for the Trading Unit and Marketing Business.
    • Lead by example to embed the Marketing behaviours as the way the Marketing Business works together.
  • Discover, identify, analyse, execute, manage, and monetize dislocations and mispricing, in both physical and financial base metals markets.
  • Define and execute metals trading strategy, capturing the best possible value in metals trading for Anglo American Marketing Limited.
  • Partner the development and implementation of the global metals trading strategy.
  • Continuously explore business opportunities with additional market counterparties, while training and supporting new joiners to the metals trading team.
  • Target Delivery
    • Formulate and execute trading strategies in physical and financial metals markets, leveraging all tradeable instruments within the base metals complex.
    • Continuous dialog with Shanghai, Singapore, and other Anglo American offices to ensure complete understanding of market inefficiencies and market dynamics.
  • Optimisation and Growth
    • Manage existing and new client accounts in conjunction with the sales team to develop new opportunities.
    • Actively discuss market drivers, inefficiencies, and intangible optionality within the market and client franchise with sales and research teams, to formulate trade ideas and proactive solution pitches for the trading book as well as the client franchise.
  • Risk and Governance
    • Deliver the trading strategies within Marketing’s defined risk and governance framework.
    • Coach others to embed a zero-breach culture.
    • Ensure all trades are executed within approved limits.

Qualifications:

  • Solid and widespread established network in the industry with senior representatives of all counterparts (i.e. producers, consumers, traders, etc.).
  • Mastery of the economic, commercial and political issues affecting the base metals markets.
  • Mastery of global commodity markets and their drivers.
  • Mastery of base metals value chain.
  • Mastery of fundamentals market drivers (i.e. Pricing, delivery strategy, value chain dynamics, net back calculations).
  • Understanding and track record in Refined Metals trading.
  • Understanding of financial risk management and derivatives trading.
