We are constructing a state-of-the-art underground mine to enable the extraction of Polyhalite – a unique multi-nutrient fertiliser – along with the necessary infrastructure both above and below ground that will be required for transport, processing, and distribution. POLY4 is our flagship multi-nutrient fertiliser product. Made from polyhalite, it contains four of the six macro-nutrients and many micronutrients that are essential to plant growth. It allows farmers to maximise their crop yield, increase quality and improve soil structure with one simple product.

Join us as The Construction Manager where you will be responsible for ensuring all construction scope on the Woodsmith site is planned, executed and evaluated such that all works are compliant with regulatory requirements and meet the agreed technical specifications, schedule and budget constraints. The Construction Manager, under the direction of the Manager - Woodsmith will undertake day to day duties, always encouraging a positive safety and environment culture in the organization, preparing and implementing construction plans for the project, monitoring and reporting progress. They will ensure that all planned work is completed safely and that the project is run in accordance with the construction schedule. Understanding and anticipating operational, technical and safety challenges, take action to prevent or eliminate them, and seek continuous improvement. Oversee the recruitment and development of superintendents, supervisors, shift managers and operators, providing support, encouragement, advice, and guidance to build an effective workforce.

High level activities

  • Safety
    • Provide assurance that all construction activities comply with statutory requirements
    • Ensure all SOPs/Permits/JHAs in place for all construction activities
    • Understand and implement the Company’s safety policy, standards, and systems
    • Ensure that Shift Managers, Superintendents, Supervisors, and engineers conduct risk assessments on activities within their area of responsibility, ensuring that the methods and systems of work are safe
    • Understand the responsibilities of all personnel undertaking work and satisfy yourself by communication and observation that they are aware of those responsibilities and are appropriately equipped to play their part
    • Conduct health and safety inspections, including participating in the Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) program as required, and record and follow up any actions that are identified
    • Ensure accident and near-miss reporting procedures are understood and complied with, and assist with accident investigations as required
    • Actively contribute to site safety review meetings; Set a personal example on all matters of health and safety.
    • Comply with the Technical Risk Management (TRM) process, execute duties as the appointed Risk Owner and Critical Control Owner as required.
    • Ensure any outstanding remedial actions, related to construction scopes, that have been identified and mitigated as a result of a statutory inspection.
  • Construction Management
    • Interface on a daily basis with the Construction Contractors to ensure safety, quality, execution plans and schedule are tracked, challenged and managed to meet the project objectives.
    • Have a full understanding of the construction scope and schedules to anticipate and mitigate risks
    • Responsible for the day-to-day progress analysis, management and reporting for all active scopes on the Woodsmith site.
    • Ensure construction readiness and planning process is adhered to and assured
    • Contribute to Lessons Learned processes upon completion of scope and ensure learnings are incorporated into future plans and construction schedule forecasts are updated accordingly
    • Review and approve 7/21 forecast schedule, manage and report on any deviations from the project baseline schedule
    • Review and input into construction methodologies and schedules
    • Ensure permit to work process is resourced and executed to support the construction schedule
  • People/Leadership
    • Manage Surface and UG Superintendents rosters to ensure 24/7 emergency response and mine management coverage.
    • Accountable for control room management under the direction of the shift superintendents
    • Ensure shift reporting to Woodsmith Management team
    • Take part in pre-start activities at the beginning of each shift
    • Have agreed specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound KPI`s with regular appraisals with the Manager – Woodsmith and their direct reports
    • Immediately rectify or stop any operation or work that in your opinion needs to be rectified or stopped on grounds of safety
    • Intervene when personnel are failing to discharge their health and safety responsibilities, and encourage good behaviour and practice;

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering or similar
  • HNC/HND in relevant discipline
  • Have undergone or be prepared to undergo recognised supervisory or management training in accordance with the National Occupational Standards relating to your role.

Technical Knowledge:

  • A minimum of 10 years in Senior construction management positions preferably in Shaft sinking or Mining environment.
  • You will have experience managing sites within a highly regulated environment
  • Have experience of emergency protocols and procedures
  • Knowledge of the 2014 UK Mining Regulations, how they are interpreted and how they are applied, preferable.
  • You understand and can interpret construction schedules to identify inefficiencies, sequence improvement and/or construction risk
  • You understand problem solving and decision-making techniques. You are able to solve problems in your daily work.
  • You are able to develop effective working relationships with construction teams and contractors.
  • You can communicate effectively, listen actively, and provide constructive feedback.
  • You have the ability to organise and prioritise effectively.
  • You are able to influence people to keep themselves and those around them safe
  • You know how to engage with, supervisors, superintendents, shift managers, engineers, and workers to create alignment rather than conflict.
  • You know that Anglo American can only succeed if our contractors are successful, and you know how to build trust.
  • You understand the possible approaches to managing conflict.
