As a Development Scientist, you’ll work at the forefront of gas metrology, developing reference gas mixtures, analytical methods and measurement software that support hydrogen, carbon capture and wider sustainable energy applications. You will provide research, consultancy and technical support to internal teams and external clients, helping them achieve world-class traceability and measurement accuracy across their processes.
What you’ll be doing:
- Designing and delivering innovative research projects in gas and liquid analysis, with a strong focus on hydrogen and carbon dioxide impurity measurement for fuel cells and carbon capture.
- Developing, commissioning and validating new analytical instruments and methods to extend measurement capability and broaden the service portfolio.
- Contributing to the production of primary reference gas mixtures in line with UKAS accreditation and stringent internal technical standards.
- Providing expert technical consultancy to customers on cylinder passivation, gas purity and advanced metrology concepts.
- Supporting and sometimes leading funded and exploratory R&D projects, including preparing successful grant applications.
- Assisting with the development of advanced measurement and data processing software to improve precision and efficiency.
- Presenting new concepts and results at international conferences and through publications in scientific journals.
About you:
- Degree-qualified in a relevant scientific discipline (or equivalent substantial technical experience in a related field).
- Strong understanding of measurement science, gas analysis and metrology, with experience delivering new concepts into practical applications.
- Comfortable working with laboratory instrumentation, analytical methods and data analysis; some programming or scripting experience is an advantage.
- Excellent communicator, able to explain complex technical topics clearly to varied audiences and build strong client relationships.
- Highly organised, able to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic R&D environment.
- Masters or PhD in Chemistry or in related field.
You’ll join a collaborative innovations and development team working closely with specialists across a wider gases and clean-energy network, contributing to new services that support the transition to a more sustainable energy system.
