Health, Safety & Environmental Officer
We are supporting a well-established precision engineering business operating within a busy manufacturing environment. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental Officer to join their team at their Greater Manchester facility.
Purpose of the role
Ensure the business maintains high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance, while promoting a safe and positive working environment across the site. This is a practical, hands-on role within a metallic manufacturing environment, working closely with employees, management, facilities and the divisional H&S Manager.
Typical responsibilities
- Create and maintain safe working areas and challenge unsafe practices
- Complete and review risk assessments, safe systems of work and operational controls
- Conduct weekly H&S audits and manage corrective actions
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and corrective actions
- Provide practical H&S and environmental training and advice to employees and managers
- Support emergency arrangements, including fire safety, spill response, first aid and evacuation drills
- Promote positive safety reporting and employee consultation
- Manage hazardous substance inventories and safety data sheets
- Lead the annual ISO 14001 audit process, including preparation and follow-up actions
- Support environmental permits, waste management and environmental compliance
- Monitor waste segregation, storage, transfer and disposal
- Maintain relevant environmental and H&S records
- Work closely with site facilities and the divisional H&S Manager
Ideal candidate
- Minimum 3 years’ HSE experience
- Previous experience within a metallic manufacturing environment, ideally sheet metal, machining or precision engineering
- NEBOSH or IOSH certification
- Working knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation
- Experience with risk assessments, SSOW and H&S auditing
- Accident / incident investigation and root cause analysis experience
- ISO 14001 and environmental compliance experience
- Hazardous substances / COSHH and SDS experience
- Practical, pragmatic and solution-focused approach
- Strong communication skills and ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
