We’re recruiting a Project Manager on behalf of an innovative UK engineering and technology organisation developing advanced subsea systems and solutions across the defence, energy, scientific and maritime sectors. This is an internal engineering project management role focused on Research & Development (R&D), technical development and product innovation. Rather than managing customer delivery programmes, you’ll lead internally funded engineering projects, supporting the development of new technologies from concept through design, development, verification and completion.

The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams including software, hardware, electro-mechanical design and New Product Introduction (NPI), providing the planning, structure and governance required to deliver complex technical projects successfully.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering internal engineering development projects, ensuring technical objectives, budgets and delivery milestones are achieved. Working across multiple engineering disciplines, you’ll support projects throughout the product development lifecycle, managing schedules, resources, risks and stakeholder communication to ensure successful delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a technical R&D environment, collaborating closely with engineering teams and helping bring innovative products and technologies through development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead internal research, technical development and product engineering projects from concept through to completion.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans covering milestones, activities, dependencies and resources.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams across software, hardware, electro-mechanical design and New Product Introduction (NPI).
  • Work closely with engineering teams and technical specialists to define project requirements, deliverables and development activities.
  • Monitor project progress against agreed timelines, budgets and technical objectives.
  • Manage project budgets ranging from £50k to £2m+, ensuring effective cost control and escalation of issues where required.
  • Identify, assess and manage project risks, issues and dependencies throughout delivery.
  • Lead internal project reviews and gateway activities, ensuring actions are captured and completed.
  • Provide clear project reporting and communication to stakeholders across the business.
  • Support continuous improvement of project delivery processes and capture lessons learned from completed programmes.

About You

You’ll have experience managing projects within an engineering, technology or product development environment and be comfortable coordinating technical activities across multidisciplinary teams. You’ll understand the challenges of delivering complex engineering projects and be confident working with technical specialists, engineers and senior stakeholders to drive progress and achieve project objectives. This role requires someone who can combine strong project management capability with enough technical understanding to effectively support engineering teams and navigate complex development programmes.

Essential Experience

  • Engineering project management within a technical or product development environment.
  • Experience delivering projects involving cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Understanding of product development processes and engineering lifecycles.
  • Strong planning, scheduling and organisational skills.
  • Experience managing project risks, issues, budgets and dependencies.
  • Ability to coordinate technical teams and drive delivery through others.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience using Microsoft Project or equivalent project planning tools.

Experience with Agile development methodologies, Jira, stage-gate processes or regulated engineering environments would be advantageous.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Project Management qualification (APM, PMI, PRINCE2 or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Degree qualified in Engineering or another relevant technical discipline.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of some programmes, candidates must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).
