We're recruiting an Engineering Project Manager on behalf of an innovative UK engineering and technology organisation that develops advanced electronic and software-based systems for safety-critical and mission-critical applications across the defence, maritime, offshore and scientific sectors.
This is an internal engineering project management role focused on Research & Development (R&D), technology development and New Product Introduction (NPI). Rather than delivering customer contracts, you'll lead engineering development programmes, working alongside multidisciplinary teams to take innovative products from concept through design, development, verification and into manufacture.
The successful candidate will work closely with software, electronics, systems and mechanical engineering teams, providing the structure, governance and planning required to successfully deliver complex technical programmes. This opportunity would suit either an experienced Engineering Project Manager or an ambitious Project Engineer looking to take the next step into a dedicated project management role.
The Role
You'll be responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering internal engineering and product development projects, ensuring technical, budget and schedule objectives are achieved. Working across multiple engineering disciplines, you'll help drive projects through the full product development lifecycle, maintaining effective governance, managing technical risks and ensuring engineering teams remain aligned on project objectives. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in an R&D environment, partnering closely with engineering teams and helping shape the development of innovative products and technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead internal R&D, technology development and New Product Introduction (NPI) projects from concept through to completion.
- Develop and maintain detailed project plans, schedules and resource forecasts.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams across software, electronics, systems, hardware and electro-mechanical disciplines.
- Work closely with Engineering Leads and Subject Matter Experts to define project scope, technical requirements and key deliverables.
- Monitor project progress against agreed milestones, budgets and schedules.
- Identify, manage and mitigate project risks, issues and dependencies.
- Facilitate design reviews, technical reviews and stage-gate governance activities.
- Provide clear and concise project reporting to senior stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement across engineering project delivery processes.
- Capture lessons learned and support improvements across future development programmes.
About You
You'll have experience working within an engineering, technology or product development environment and be comfortable coordinating technical activities across multidisciplinary teams. You may already be working as an Engineering Project Manager, or you could be a Project Engineer, Systems Engineer or Lead Engineer who has been responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering engineering projects and is now looking to move into a dedicated project management position.
Essential Experience
We're interested in candidates who can demonstrate experience in some or most of the following:
- Engineering project delivery within a technical or engineering-led environment.
- Product development, R&D or New Product Introduction (NPI) programmes.
- Coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Planning, scheduling and resource management.
- Managing project risks, issues and dependencies.
- Working across the product development lifecycle.
- Stakeholder management within engineering organisations.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Experience using Microsoft Project or equivalent planning software.
A good understanding of engineering disciplines such as software, electronics, hardware, systems or electro-mechanical engineering would be highly beneficial. This isn't a hands-on engineering role, but you'll need sufficient technical understanding to effectively support and coordinate engineering teams. Experience with Agile methodologies, Jira, stage-gate development processes or systems engineering environments would also be advantageous.
Qualifications
Essential
- A recognised Project Management qualification (APM PMQ, PRINCE2, PMP or equivalent), or the willingness to work towards one.
Desirable
- Degree qualified in Engineering or another relevant technical discipline.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of some programmes, candidates must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC). Current SC Clearance is highly desirable, although applications are welcomed from candidates who are eligible and willing to undergo the clearance process.
