DCS Recruitment is currently looking for an experienced Audit Executive to join a large public sector organisation based in Colindale, London.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Internal Audit professional with a strong background within local government or the wider public sector to join an established Internal Audit team.

As Audit Executive, you will become a key point of contact for audit advice and assurance, delivering high-quality, risk-based audits across a diverse range of Council services.

The Role

You will take ownership of individual audit assignments from initial scoping and planning through to completion and the issue of final reports.

Working with a high level of independence, you will undertake a mixture of audit assignments, including compliance reviews and systems-based reviews of Council management systems.

You will ensure assignments are completed using a risk-based approach and in accordance with professional standards, while proactively identifying opportunities to improve audit processes, working practices and the wider service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan individual audit assignments in accordance with the Annual Audit Plan.
  • Undertake audit assignments independently, including compliance and systems-based reviews.
  • Manage audits from initial scoping through to completion and final reporting.
  • Conduct follow-up reviews in accordance with Internal Audit procedures.
  • Ensure assignments follow a risk-based approach and relevant professional auditing standards.
  • Identify and report system weaknesses, financial concerns and areas requiring additional audit attention.
  • Consider and review value-for-money aspects of services where appropriate.
  • Manage your own workload, assignment allocations, deadlines and training commitments.
  • Complete assignments within allocated budgets and raise potential variations where necessary.
  • Maintain up-to-date accounting knowledge and professional audit expertise.
  • Provide technical and professional audit advice to staff throughout the Council.
  • Support junior auditors and contribute to their professional development.
  • Represent the Internal Audit function at relevant internal working groups.
  • Contribute to practical and innovative solutions to financial, legislative, logistical and operational challenges.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of training for key stakeholders, including Council staff, members and schools.
  • Support Internal Audit projects and investigations where required.
  • Maintain appropriate links with the Corporate Anti-Fraud Team.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of service standards, customer satisfaction and performance.

Essential Skills & Experience

To be considered for this position, you should have:

  • A relevant qualification, such as CIPFA or another CCAB-recognised qualification, AAT or IIA.
  • Degree-level education or equivalent.
  • Sound knowledge of professional auditing principles and standards.
  • At least 5 years' experience working within an Internal Audit team in a public sector organisation.
  • Demonstrable experience undertaking internal audits from initial scoping through to the issue of the final report.
  • Strong knowledge of risk-based internal auditing and the ability to apply this effectively in practice.
  • Knowledge of the Local Government finance framework, including Section 151 requirements, other statutory requirements and relevant codes of practice.
  • A high level of understanding of the services provided by a large UK local authority.
  • Good knowledge of the contract and procurement issues facing Councils and the appropriate audit and assurance response.
  • The ability to manage audit assignments independently while maintaining quality, accuracy and agreed timescales.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the confidence to provide professional advice across different areas of an organisation.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced auditor who is confident taking responsibility for their own assignments while working effectively as part of a wider Internal Audit team.

You'll need to be analytical, organised and comfortable engaging with stakeholders at different levels across the organisation.

You'll be able to identify risks and weaknesses, communicate findings clearly and provide practical recommendations that help improve governance, compliance, financial control and service delivery.

This role would particularly suit someone who already has substantial experience within Local Government or public sector Internal Audit and is comfortable working across a broad range of Council services.
