Findmypast, part of DC Thomson, is recruiting for an experienced Product Designer to join our team in any one of our Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, or London office hubs, with 1 day per month in our London office.
Design plays a central role in how we bring our product to life, connecting complex data, meaningful content, and intuitive experiences that help users make real discoveries. This is an opportunity to work on complex, data-rich products that combine content, search, and storytelling at scale. You’ll operate in ambiguous problem spaces, contribute to product direction, and deliver high-quality solutions that balance user needs, product strategy, and business outcomes. You’ll also have the opportunity to support and mentor other designers, helping raise the bar across the team.
Findmypast is a family history company with a mission to empower people to discover and share their family stories. With billions of historical records and a passionate community, we’re building tools that make research easier, more rewarding, and more engaging for both hobbyists and experienced researchers across B2C and B2B products.
This Product Designer role spans end-to-end product design, from discovery and research through to delivery, across a range of problem spaces including acquisition, onboarding, subscriptions, content experiences, and core product journeys, many of which directly impact activation, engagement, and retention.
The successful candidate will work across both customer-facing (B2C) and B2B product experiences, often designing across shared systems and components to create consistent, scalable experiences across the platform.
Key responsibilities include:
- Help define and shape design problems, breaking down objectives into clear, actionable work
- Own or contribute to design problems end-to-end, from understanding user and business needs through to delivering polished, production-ready solutions
- Design intuitive, scalable experiences across web and app, considering full user journeys rather than isolated screens
- Contribute to shaping product direction in collaboration with Product, Engineering, Data, and Research
- Use qualitative and quantitative insight to inform decisions and evaluate outcomes
- Explore multiple solution directions, balancing speed, quality, and long-term product coherence
- Contribute to improving key product outcomes such as activation, engagement, and retention through thoughtful design decisions
- Design across a range of areas including core product journeys, onboarding and activation experiences, subscription and value communication, and content and storytelling experiences
- Contribute to and evolve the design system, ensuring consistency and scalability across the product
- Share work openly, give and receive feedback, and contribute to a strong design culture
Skills:
- Understanding of how product decisions influence user behaviour and commercial outcomes
- Capable of independently owning work, with support where needed
- Comfortable working across both discovery and delivery, knowing when to explore broadly and when to focus
- Strong product thinking that balances user needs with business goals
- Confident working with data and research to inform decisions
- Able to navigate ambiguity, helping define problems as well as solve them
- Ability to design end-to-end experiences, not just individual screens
- Strong interaction and visual design skills, with attention to detail and usability
- Collaborative partner to Product, Engineering, and other disciplines
- Curious about emerging technologies and how they can improve product experiences
- Ability to translate complex problems into clear, user-centred solutions
- Strong communication skills, able to explain decisions and influence direction
Experience:
- Designing digital products across web and/or app, with a demonstrable portfolio of end-to-end product thinking and shipped work
- Owning or contributing to design work from problem definition through to delivery
- Working in cross-functional teams, contributing to product direction as well as execution
- Using data and/or research to inform decisions, form hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes
- Designing within or contributing to a design system, with an understanding of scalable and consistent design patterns
- Applying AI tools in design workflows, with an understanding of when and how to use them appropriately
Desirable:
- Experience working on subscriptions, content, or data-rich products
- Working across both B2C and B2B products, or platform-based products serving multiple user types
- Background in either a SaaS or platform-based business
Behaviours that will help this role succeed:
- Collaborates effectively across disciplines to drive outcomes
- Takes ownership of problems and follows them through to resolution
- Navigates ambiguity with initiative and sound judgment
- Continuously learns, adapts, and improves how work is delivered
- Experiments thoughtfully, using insight and evidence to guide decisions
- Brings curiosity and a proactive mindset to improving products and processes
