DC Thomson are hiring a Deputy Team Leader - Production (Night Shift) to join the team in Kingsway, Dundee on a permanent basis. This role exists to ensure consistent, safe, and efficient night‑shift production delivery, acting as the operational anchor that enables continuity, rapid response, and capability building within a time‑critical environment. The Deputy Team Leader supports the Team Leader in delivering production outcomes and assumes full operational accountability during periods of cover, ensuring no loss of performance, quality, or control.
Our Kingsway site produces 11 daily newspaper titles alongside Sunday Titles including The Sunday Post and many other weekly and periodicals.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Operating within a challenging high speed environment, on time delivery is the first target of every shift. The Deputy Team Leader focuses on execution excellence, resilience, and skills flexibility. It plays a key part in a portfolio-based production model, sharing learning across shifts and supporting the move towards skills-based deployment and outcomes driven performance.
The successful candidate is accountable for shift‑level delivery, discipline, and escalation quality. You will own how work is coordinated, risks are surfaced, and standards are maintained on night shift. While this role comes with a high level of responsibility, you will receive training, support, and guidance when needed with support from the management team day or night.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Supporting safe and compliant production delivery, actively reinforcing Health & Safety standards on shift.
- On‑shift coordination of people and activities effectively, minimising downtime and disruption.
- Accountable for high‑quality incident reporting and escalation, ensuring issues are understood and acted on quickly.
- Maintaining production quality and documentation, enabling traceability and operational learning.
- Role‑modelling standards and behaviours, supporting team skill development and engagement.
- Ensuring smooth handovers and continuity, ensuring clear communication across shifts.
Requirements
Skills:
- Operations & Production Management – Applies operational processes and coordinates activities to deliver planned production outcomes.
- Incident management – Identifies, records, and supports resolution of incidents, escalating appropriately.
- Problem management – Assists in investigating causes of operational issues and contributes to preventative actions.
- Resource management – Supports effective deployment of people and skills within agreed plans.
- Quality management – Applies quality standards and identifies deviations for correction.
- Health and safety management – Follows and promotes safe working practices and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent IT Skills.
Experience:
- Technical competence in at least one operational area (offset print production, or mechanical/electrical production engineering).
- Experience working night shifts in time‑critical production environments.
- Exposure to preventative maintenance schedules and production constraints.
