About the role
The CRM Marketing Manager oversees engagement and retention-focused marketing activity across DC Thomson’s magazine and comic subscription brands including Beano, Puzzler and The People’s Friend. They maximise opportunities for growth and deliver the best experience at every stage of the customer lifestyle.
What to expect
This hands-on role has operational responsibility for a small, skilled team delivering email marketing that’s geared to retention.
You’ll keep the team running smoothly and develop operational aspects of CRM for DC Thomson. You’ll represent your team to internal stakeholders and take part in cross-team projects to engage leads, convert and retain customers.
You’ll have the CRM experience to deliver a demanding email marketing calendar. This will include a wealth of knowledge on best practice in email marketing, automation, segmentation, customer permissions, campaign analysis and data handling.
This role is suited to a skilled marketing professional with experience in B2C subscriptions and working with CRM tools (we use HubSpot) to manage customer lifecycles.
Accountabilities and responsibilities
- Manage the calendar of email sends and the processes that trigger automated emails, including service communications. Document and communicate these, report the results of tests on an email testing schedule and share overall results through relevant reporting channels.
- Be accountable for copy and assets used in emails and manage every aspect from concept to delivery and post-send analysis of: one off / regular email sends (campaign-led and ad hoc offers) and triggered emails (automated welcome campaigns, renewal cycles, abandoned basket emails etc).
- Manage close working relationships with the Operations and Customer Experience teams to ensure accuracy of information and consistency in customer touchpoints.
- Ensure customer communications meet the highest quality standards. Collaborate with relevant teams on the ongoing optimisation of email and postal communications.
- Create responsive email templates geared towards conversion, following email design best practice.
- Source email content from editorial colleagues where needed, brief in email assets to design teams and coordinate joined-up landing pages with relevant teams.
- Develop and roll out strategies to ensure our email marketing list(s) see significant growth (in quality leads), for example from onsite overlays, competitions or sampling forms; take actions to minimise disengagement and unsubscribes.
- Identify opportunities to automate processes (communications, templates, data imports) where possible to improve efficiency and service to recipients. Ensure consistency across brands.
- Ensure the success of email marketing activity can be tracked to a high level of detail.
- Act as a customer marketing permissions expert, ensuring compliance.
- Be a lead user of our email marketing platform and related tools and be a main point of contact with suppliers where necessary.
- Participate as a key stakeholder in projects with our Product team to successfully implement new CRM related technologies.
Knowledge, skills and attributes
The postholder should demonstrate competence and previous experience in the following areas:
- Managing and getting the best from CRM tools / ESPs and related technologies.
- Creating and deploying a calendar of email campaigns and automations optimised to generate ROI and improve retention.
- Advocating CRM best practice and understanding data protection regulation.
- Managing customer data to the highest standard.
- Setting up and delivering automated email campaigns and complex templates.
- Developing or editing communications and content using HTML.
- Tracking and reporting email conversions, revenue and other metrics. Using Google Analytics and similar tools at an advanced level.
- Taking a test-and-learn approach to audience segmentation and A/B testing.
- Confidently and accurately using Excel and similar tools to process data.
- Briefing designers efficiently and effectively. Demonstrating excellent copywriting skills and attention to detail.
- Managing productive relationships both internally and externally.
- Line managing staff and leading teams, including managing recruitment, induction and performance.

This is a full-time, temporary position (12-month fixed-term contract), working 35 hours per week. The role can be based remotely or hybrid from one of our offices (London, Dundee, Glasgow or Aberdeen).
