Job overview
This new post is a permanent Clinical Fellow post in Anaesthesia, offering an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic doctor to join a friendly and well-established Anaesthetic Department.
The post is designed for doctors seeking to consolidate and further develop their clinical experience in preparation for application to ST4 Anaesthesia training.
At DBTH we offer a Tier 3 Weight Management Service, including access to specialist Bariatric surgery. A small group of senior anaesthetists undertake these operating lists most weeks, mainly at our Bassetlaw site. From an anaesthetic perspective these lists offer the opportunity to learn more about safe anaesthesia for patient's living with obesity; including managing the high risk airway, intra operative care of the bariatric surgical patient and opiate sparing analgesia strategies. As severe obesity is becoming more prevalent in our patient population, the skills learnt in these lists can then be applied to a wide range of surgical specialities.
Where service needs allow, elements of daytime clinical work can be tailored to support the candidate’s individual interests and career goals, including the development of subspecialty experience.
The department provides a supportive environment with structured supervision, training opportunities and clear pathways for development and progression.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Fellow will:
- Provide safe and effective anaesthetic care across theatres, critical care and obstetrics
- Participate in elective and emergency operating lists
- Contribute to the management of patients within critical care units
- Provide obstetric anaesthesia including labour ward and emergency cover
- Participate in the full shift on-call rota, including nights and weekends
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Where service needs allow, there will be opportunities to tailor daytime clinical activity in line with the candidate’s interests, including exposure to subspecialty areas such as critical care, obstetrics, trauma, vascular, paediatrics or pain.
The post includes:
- A minimum of one consultant-attached list per month to support supervised learning and development
- Allocation of a dedicated Clinical Fellow supervisor, with regular meetings to support portfolio development, career planning and progression toward ST4.
- Attendance at weekly consultant-led anaesthetic teaching sessions
- Provision of 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) per week (equivalent to 4 hours) for study, portfolio development, audit and professional development
Additional responsibilities include:
- Supporting service delivery across all Trust sites
- Participating in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activity
- Supporting teaching and training of junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff
