Provides customer service by receiving and recording cash and charge payments for goods and services provided by the store.

Essential Functions/Duties

  • Greet customers entering the store.
  • Answer customers' questions and provide information on store merchandise.
  • Establish or identify prices of goods, services, and tabulate bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners.
  • Compute and record totals of transactions.
  • Receive payment by cash, check, credit card, voucher, or automatic debit.
  • Validate check payments by requesting driver’s license information.
  • Issue receipts, refunds, credits or change due to customers.
  • Bag or box merchandise for customers.
  • Offer customer carry‑out service at the completion of transactions.
  • Count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shifts to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change.
  • Maintain clean and orderly checkout areas.
  • Process merchandise returns and exchanges.
  • Request information or assistance using paging system.
  • Resolve customer complaints in a courteous manner and involve supervisor when necessary.
  • Sort, count, and wrap currency and coins.
  • Weigh items sold by weight to determine prices.
  • Recommend accessory items or related merchandise when appropriate.
  • Assist in investigations to resolve any register or transaction out‑of‑balance problem.
  • Assist in stocking shelves and marking prices.
  • Answer telephone.
  • Other duties as assigned by store management.

Required Skills/Experience

  • Proven work history in providing customer service.
  • Ability to calculate numbers, correct entries, and utilize computer system.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information, policies, and/or procedures in a manner easily understood by the customer.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

Required Education/Certification

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience preferred not required.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work majority of shift standing and be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
