This person will have a vision for evolving the magazine's design approach from issue to issue. The role works closely with the art director and our team of editors, photographers and stylists to produce layouts which creatively negotiate restrictions and prioritise the form and ideas of the content over the imposition of a house style. You would be empathetic and sensitive to the vision and work of our collaborators.
Duties, Responsibilities & Deliverables
- Working with the Art Director to create an inspiring reader experience showcasing our features, photography and fashion.
- Collaborating with the Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Director, Art Director, Photo Editor and editorial teams to create original editorial formats generating inspiring visual proposals for reinvigorating Dazed.
- Responsible for the graphic design layout of the magazine and ensuring that the InDesign files adhere to production guidelines for repro and print.
- Attend production and creative communications meetings.
- Help, maintain, and uphold and lead consistent application of the brand across print under the Art Director.
- Research, concept development and execution.
- Assist on art direction research & work on shoot decks.
- Awareness of current graphic design trends – overall creative landscape.
- Communication of graphic design to team and stakeholders.
- Designing the magazine to production deadlines working closely with the Art Director.
- Liaising with editorial team regarding the look of the features.
- Design launch assets for the magazine with the Art Director.
- Work on translating graphic language of the print magazine into online/digital/social world.
- Oversee all assets, from receiving to online rollout.
- Make sure all assets are ready for online rollout and are all in the right formats.
Desired Skills & Experience
- 3+ years of relevant experience in editorial design (agency or in-house in a magazine/publishing house).
- Enjoy working with photography and have a strong passion for the Dazed brand.
- Excellent organizational skills - assertive and proactive.
- Be able to maintain high standards of typography and design within a pressured publishing environment.
- Have a dedicated work ethic and strong interest in personal development.
- Have an understanding of editorial and prepress workflows and a strong working knowledge of Adobe CC. A knowledge of GREP would be useful but not essential.
- Comfortable with After Effects, basic animation skills.
- A collaborative team player but also able to work independently.
