Job Overview
The Practice Development Nurse (PDN) will provide senior clinical leadership, education, and quality improvement expertise to support the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based haemodialysis services within an independent healthcare provider. The postholder will lead practice development, workforce capability, and standardisation of care across multiple sites in England and Wales. The role includes responsibility for supporting the onboarding of new clinical staff, including structured teaching, assessment of clinical competencies, and delivery of Objective Structured Clinical Assessments (OSCAs/OSCEs). This is a national role requiring extensive travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Practice Development & Clinical Leadership
- Provide expert leadership in haemodialysis nursing practice
- Lead the implementation of evidence-based practice and reduce unwarranted variation
- Act as a senior clinical resource supporting complex decision-making
- Education, Training & Onboarding
- Design and deliver education programmes for haemodialysis staff
- Support onboarding of new starters through structured induction programmes
- Teach, assess, and sign off clinical competencies
- Develop, deliver, and quality-assure OSCAs/OSCEs
- Support assessors, preceptors, and supervisors
- Quality Improvement & Governance
- Lead audits, service evaluations, and quality improvement initiatives
- Support safety event investigations and embed learning into practice
- Support compliance with regulatory and internal governance standards
- Policy & Standards
- Develop, review, and implement clinical policies and guidelines
- Ensure alignment with evidence, professional standards, and organisational governance
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Work collaboratively with clinical, operational, and education leaders
- Provide expert nursing input into service development and workforce planning
- National Role & Travel
- Provide on-site education, assessment, and assurance across England and Wales
- Adapt delivery to local needs while maintaining national standards
- Professional Accountability
- Maintain NMC registration and practise in accordance with the NMC Code.
- Be accountable for professional practice and contribute to clinical governance.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration
- Substantial post-registration haemodialysis experience
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCert/PGDip Education or equivalent)
- Experience delivering education and assessing clinical competencies
- Experience with OSCA/OSCE assessment processes
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively across England and Wales
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
Desirable Criteria
- Master’s degree or working towards postgraduate qualification
- Experience in multi-site or national roles
- Quality improvement or service development experience
- Experience within independent healthcare sector
