Description

This role offers an excellent opportunity to work within the Complex Injury Claims Team dealing with large loss claims. In this role, you will assist the lead lawyers on more complex claims involving coverage as well as running your own multi-track files arising from RTA’s. The role may include EL/PL as well.

Experience advising the MIB and a working understanding of the Untraced and Uninsured Drivers Agreements is essential. Experience of complex medical issues and advising insurers in relation to policy indemnity and liability under Article 75 is preferred. Excellent attention to detail is essential.

The role also includes the need to engage with sophisticated senior claims handlers in long-standing insurance clients. In this role, you may also be required to assist your Lead Lawyer in activities which enhance and develop Keoghs’ profile.

Key Responsibilities

You will work as part of a team progressing each file from receipt of papers from the insurer client to resolution of the claim dealing with all aspects of liability and quantum as well as indemnity issues as they arise. The role will include:

  • Managing a caseload of complex injury claims consisting of claims typically valued at around £100k – £500k depending on what stage you have reached in your own development.
  • Working with the Lead Lawyer to manage claims in excess of £1m including claims involving catastrophic injuries, taking responsibility for all procedural aspects of the files, managing their day to day progression and ensuring the lead is aware of all deadlines and taking necessary action to ensure they are met.
  • Communicating with sophisticated insurer clients, advising them on all aspects of claims and keeping them updated as the matter progresses.
  • Developing a detailed understanding of policy indemnity and liability under Article 75 as well as the Untraced and Uninsured Drivers Agreements.
  • Developing relationships with Keoghs’ clients in order to attract work on an instruction by instruction basis as you build your own caseload.
  • Drafting all pleadings to include defences and counter schedules in complex cases.
  • Forensic analysis of voluminous liability and quantum evidence, identifying anomalies and other relevant information across various sources and categories of evidence and translating issues identified in evidence into a meaningful difference on the file.
  • Drafting concise technical advice on all aspects of claim handling to include indemnity, liability, quantum, causation and strategy. Proficiently using spreadsheets to produce estimate/reserve advice for clients and as a tool which informs negotiations at JSMs.
  • Using the Ogden Tables and understanding how they underpin our spreadsheets as tools to calculate future losses including loss of earnings, pension and care claims where the multiplicand increases as the claimant ages.
  • Building rapport and constructive relationships with solicitors for other parties in order to engage meaningfully with them to progress the matter to conclusion and achieve excellent results for our clients.
  • Attending site visits, MDT meetings, client meetings, mediation and JSMs.
  • Engaging with counsel and experts in conference and on the telephone.
  • Delivery of agreed performance targets and quality standards.
  • The Large Loss Lawyer is expected to record a minimum of 6.8 chargeable hours per day.
  • Responsibility for a caseload of 30-40 large loss files.
  • Delegation to more junior members of the team and be fully engaged in their development in terms of technical ability and achievement of objectives.
  • Maintaining case management systems with up to date management information for clients.
  • To ensure compliance with the SRA rules & regulations.

  • Qualified solicitor, CILEX or proven relevant legal experience is essential.
