Are you passionate about supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to develop practical transferable skills for life through Animal Care? Do you have the vocational expertise and teaching capability or desire to learn those skills to deliver engaging, hands‑on learning in a specialist education setting? This is an exciting opportunity to join the Education team at David Lewis College as an Animal Care Tutor/Trainee Tutor, delivering inclusive, skills‑based vocational learning within our specialist provision.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an Animal Care Tutor, you will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, individualised vocational sessions that support SEND learners to develop knowledge, practical competencies and employability skills within Animal Care. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging Animal Care sessions aligned to individual EHCP outcomes.
  • Supporting learners to develop practical animal handling, husbandry and welfare skills.
  • Embedding sensory, communication, functional literacy, numeracy and employability skills within vocational delivery.
  • Creating a safe, structured and supportive learning environment within practical settings.
  • Monitoring learner progress through formative and summative assessment.
  • Adapting delivery methods to meet a wide range of cognitive, behavioural and sensory needs.
  • Promoting learner independence, confidence and personal development.
  • Working collaboratively with therapy, residential and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with health & safety and animal welfare standards.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a committed vocational practitioner with both industry knowledge and educational capability. Essential requirements include:

  • Minimum Level 3 qualification in Animal Care (or closely related discipline)
  • A recognised teaching/tutoring qualification (e.g. PTLLS/AET, CTLLS, DTLLS or equivalent) or willing to work towards.
  • Experience delivering practical or vocational learning.
  • Understanding of SEND learners and differentiated teaching strategies.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare and safe working practices.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and learner‑centred practice.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a specialist education or SEND environment
  • Experience embedding functional skills within vocational learning
