High-End Domestic Projects Private Practice | Full-Time | 1–2 Years Post Part III
We are a small, design-focused practice with a strong reputation for delivering thoughtful, high-quality residential architecture. Our work spans bespoke homes, sensitive alterations, and carefully considered extensions; projects where attention to detail and a genuine commitment to quality make all the difference.
We are looking for an architect to join our team who shares that commitment and is keen to play a meaningful role in the way we work and the spaces we create.
The Role
This is a hands-on position in which you will be involved in projects from the earliest conversations with a client through to completion on site. We value people who find satisfaction in every stage of that journey; who understand that architecture is as much about careful delivery as it is about great ideas, and who apply themselves to sketch design as much as site inspections.
You will work closely with the directors and broader team to take real responsibility for the projects in your care, building trusted relationships with clients, contractors and consultants along the way.
What We're Looking For
- ARB registration and Part III qualification, with 1–2 years of post-qualification experience in private practice
- A portfolio that demonstrates both design sensibility and technical care, ideally focused on high-end domestic work
- Experience running projects and managing client relationships with confidence and clarity
- Strong communication skills — with clients, contractors, and consultants alike
- Sound technical knowledge across all stages, from planning through to construction
- Proficiency in Vectorworks (essential)
Why Join Us
We are a practice that takes the quality of our work seriously and cares about the experience of the people we work with; clients and colleagues alike. You will be part of a small, committed team where your contribution matters and where there is genuine scope to grow. We work condensed hours over four days; three day weekends every weekend. With studios in both Edinburgh and North Berwick our work spans both town and county.
To Apply
Please upload your CV, a cover letter, and a concise portfolio (PDF, max 10MB) to https://www.somnermacdonald.co.uk/careers addressed to Tom and Seán. Applications close Friday 17th July. We would love to hear from you.
