The Role
Lead an engineering team to deliver high-quality software predictably and sustainably. Provide day-to-day technical and people leadership, with direct visibility into individual performance, team health, and delivery flow. Champion modern engineering practices such as continuous delivery, test automation, observability, and improved development flow to drive sustainable change that strengthens quality, pace, and long‑term engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership foster a culture of ownership, psychological safety, and continuous improvement
- Act as a visible role model for engineering excellence, demonstrating the standards, behaviours, and delivery discipline that define what “good” looks like across the team
- Ensure effective core rituals (stand‑ups, planning, backlog refinement, demos, retros) to maintain tight delivery cadence and transparency
- Monitor team capacity, flow efficiency, and impediments; actively remove blockers and elevate when necessary.
- Work proactively to ensure pod productivity is optimised by addressing issues and risks as they are identified
- Coach engineers on craft excellence (code quality, testing discipline, software performance, observability, security by design)
- Provide regular 1:1s, feedback, career development plans, and growth opportunities
- Own performance management end to end (objective setting, calibration, reviews, promotions). Where needed, put in place clear and supportive improvement steps to help individuals get back on track
- Hire and onboard engineers; build a diverse, inclusive team
- Maintain direct line of sight into day‑to‑day contributions through embedded participation in delivery rituals, code reviews, incident postmortems, and technical discussions.
- Own delivery commitments at the team level, ensuring alignment with roadmap and OKRs
- Partner with the stakeholders to provide accurate milestone updates and progress reporting to the stakeholders
- Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and manage dependencies, risks, scope creep, unforeseen complexity, and escalations across teams
- Track and improve team flow metrics (lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, MTTR)
- Champion automation in CI/CD, test coverage, and release governance; reduce toil and bottlenecks
- Collaborate with Senior Engineer(s)/Architect(s) on system design, technical strategy, and debt retirement
- Encourage high standards in code review, documentation, security posture, and observability
- Balance short‑term delivery with long‑term maintainability; facilitate technical discovery spikes and design reviews
- Maintain awareness of platform constraints, scalability, performance, and cost
- Partner with stakeholders on prioritisation, scope, and trade‑offs; align delivery to business outcomes
- Communicate plans, risks, and status to stakeholders; provide clear, no surprises updates
Essential Skills And Experience
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams as EM/SDM (typically 3–5+ years).
- Background as a senior engineer or equivalent; capable of technical guidance without being the primary coder.
- Experience with agile delivery at scale, production operations, and modern DevOps practices.
- Strong track record in hiring, performance management, and coaching.
