The ACCS department specialises in the design, manufacturing and installation of aisle containment and caging in data centres. We are seeking a CAD/CAM Apprentice to support the engineering and manufacturing teams by creating, modifying, and optimising CAD designs and CAM programs for CNC machining and sheet-metal fabrication. You will combine hands‑on workshop experience with computer‑based design work while completing a structured apprenticeship programme and college studies. This role is ideal for someone starting their engineering career who is keen to learn, develop new skills, and progress within a growing business.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in producing 2D and 3D models of components, assemblies, and fabrication drawings under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Update and amend existing drawings based on engineering changes and customer requirements.
  • Learn to interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Support documentation and design record-keeping in line with DPI/ACCS standards.
  • Help create CNC machine programs for laser cutting, punching, bending, milling, and turning operations under supervision.
  • Assist with selecting tooling, cutting parameters, and basic machine setups, always working safely and following instructions.
  • Learn to simulate and validate CAM programs to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, and safety.
  • Contribute to production routing, nesting, and optimisation activities to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Work alongside experienced machinists and fabricators to understand real-world manufacturing processes and constraints.
  • Assist with prototype builds, test pieces, and first‑off inspections.
  • Perform basic measurements and quality checks using gauges, callipers, and other metrology equipment (training provided).
  • Keep your work area clean and organised, following all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Attend all required training, internal workshops, and college days as part of your apprenticeship.
  • Complete coursework on time and maintain an up‑to‑date apprenticeship portfolio of evidence.
  • Proactively develop your technical, analytical, and problem‑solving skills through on‑the‑job learning and coaching from colleagues.
  • Maintain business and client confidentiality at all times and comply with Data Protection regulations and Information Security standards.
  • Represent the business professionally, demonstrating our values and behaviours when dealing with colleagues, clients, and third parties.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and a STEM subject or A-levels or BTEC in Engineering, Design & Technology, or similar.
  • Any prior exposure to CAD software or workshop tools.
  • Interest in engineering, design, or manufacturing.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good mathematical and spatial reasoning skills.
  • Eagerness to learn new software, tools, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively within a team.
  • Basic understanding of CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor) is beneficial but not required.
